Injury-Riddled Day For Eagles At Lehigh

Thursday’s afternoon practice was one of the milder ones we’ve seen at training camp so far, yet player after player left early with some type of ailment.

The good news is nothing appears to be too serious.

LeSean McCoy and Nate Allen both exited with cramps. (It was one of the hottest days yet.) O.J. Atogwe suffered a groin strain. Jamar Chaney left with a hamstring injury and is scheduled for an MRI Thursday night.

Eagles Make First LB Shuffle

Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jamar Chaney.Jamar Chaney didn’t find out until he got to the practice field Thursday morning for the Eagles’ walk-through.

But when Juan Castillo asked for the first-team nickel defense, Chaney was the man called on to go in alongside DeMeco Ryans.

Up until today, Brian Rolle had been occupying that spot at Lehigh. And in the spring, it was rookie Mychal Kendricks.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” Chaney said when I asked him if he expected to be part of that package for the next few days. “I just do what they tell me to do. Whether I’m out there with the twos or the ones, I just go out there and do my best. My job is just to make the decision hard on them.”

Eagles Practice Observations

Philadelphia Eagles running back Bryce BrownWhen asked if he could see himself helping the Eagles in short yardage or goal-line situations, Bryce Brown didn’t hesitate to deliver a clear answer.

“I can see myself doing anything the coaches ask me to do,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what it is, I can see myself doing it.”

That’s the right attitude to take when you’re a seventh-round pick trying to make the 53-man roster.

Cullen Jenkins Leaves Practice With Hamstring Injury

And the entire starting defensive line is now hurt…

Cullen Jenkins left practice about midway through with an undisclosed injury. He spent some time in the trainers tent earlier in the session and returned to the sidelines, but did not participate in 11-on-11’s and went in on the cart a short time after.

The entire first unit is banged up. Trent Cole is dealing with an A.C. strain, Jason Babin has a calf strain, Mike Patterson has not been cleared by doctors following offseason brain surgery, and now this.

Jim Washburn put the depth chart up this morning, and it showed “Graham” as one of the starting defensive ends. Granted, it took injuries to both Jason Babin and now Trent Cole to get there, but he’ll take it.

“It feels good because I’ve been working, man,” said Brandon Graham. “That’s the goal – to get the Number One spot. Jason Babin and those guys did a lot last year, but there is competition every year and everybody deserves a chance for that Number One. And hopefully I can push myself up there.”
