10 Philly Fitness Challenges to Get You Moving This January
From barre classes to cross training, hold yourself accountable (and win prizes!) with these January fitness challenges.
As a new year approaches, many of us start thinking about our goals and accomplishments: the ones we fulfilled the past 12 months and those we hope to achieve in the next. This self-reflection often encourages us to do things differently — and perhaps better — this time around.
To help you tap into your strengths in order to pursue progress, not perfection, a number of Philly fitness studios are offering fun 2020 challenges that’ll motivate and keep you focused on whatever goals you want to absolutely crush! As a bonus, many of them are also offering totally sweet prizes because #accountability. Whether you want to improve core stability with TRX bands or practice yoga to be more mindful, here are 10 Philly fitness challenges you can join this January.
BPM Fitness
1808 Spring Garden Street, Spring Garden
BPM’s “New Year, Same Incredible You” wants to help you be the best version of yourself with three different challenges that aren’t incorporating any measurements or weigh-ins. Tier 1 gets you 21 days of unlimited classes and four private small-group workouts for $220. The second tier is 30 days of unlimited classes and six private small-group workouts for $350. Tier 3, which costs $500, will push you for 45 days, with unlimited classes and eight private small-group workouts. Plus, all tiers include nutrition coaching from OnPoint Nutrition, so you’ll get meal plans and guides. BPM’s challenge kicks off at 12 p.m. on January 5th, and you can email BPM to participate.
Barre3
Multiple locations
Barre3’s challenge seeks to help clients shift their focus from how exercise makes us look to how it makes us feel. And we are totally down for that attitude! For $99, you’ll get unlimited studio and online classes through February 2nd, weekly inspirational content to keep you motivated all month long, and a January challenge digital workbook to help you plan and succeed. For each class you take and track on the in-studio board, you’ll be entered into a weekly raffle where you can win barre3 prizes! The challenge starts on January 6th, and any new client or client who hasn’t taken a class in at least six months can sign up here.
CoreFitness
800 North 23rd Street (indoor location) and the Art Museum steps (outdoor location)
CoreFitness’s Jan-YOU-ary program is a seven-day challenge that focuses on sweat sessions, deep restorative stretches, and mindfulness at your convenience with some socializing mixed in to keep your workouts varied, functional, and fun. From January 13th through January 20th, you’ll strive to attend all seven classes, which include multiple morning boot camps and the Friday evening restorative yoga session. Your ultimate reward is knowing that you held yourself accountable and put in the work! It’ll cost you $99 until January 8th, then increase to $154. Sign up here or by emailing CoreFitness.
Focus Barre and Yoga
1923 Chestnut Street, Rittenhouse
Focus Barre and Yoga is running two challenges to help you push past your comfort zone and crush your fitness goals. The first one is all about consistency and creating a routine: be the first person to take 20 classes total. Challenge number two is about changing it up: be the first person to take one of each type of class on our schedule. Both are totally doable, as long as you set your mind to it! One winner from each challenge will win a free month of unlimited classes at Focus.
Freehouse Fitness
1430 South Street, Graduate Hospital
On January 25th, Freehouse Fitness will host their second annual “FitGames,” which will test your strength, stamina, and endurance. A kind of fitness Olympics, the two-hour challenge will put you through five signature Freehouse workouts: High Flyer, Top Guns, Triple Shot, Bandit, and Backside. Using rebounders, bands, dumbbells, reels, ankle weights and balls, you’ll work each muscle to the MAX. It’s an epic workout worthy of a gold medal, which you’ll get in the form of a gold stainless steel stemless wine glass — perfect for the champagne celebration you’ll enjoy in the lobby when you’re done! Book your spot for $35 here.
Lumos Yoga and Barre
2001 Green Street, Fairmount
For 2020, Lumos Yoga and Barre is all about the glow up — doing what feels good on your own terms, embracing self-love, twirling on your haters, or waving goodbye to anything that only dulls your sparkle. Their “Glow Up” challenge asks you to complete 10 classes of your choosing before January 31st. Everyone who completes the challenge will be automatically entered to win the grand prize: a free month of unlimited classes and a Lumos swag bag, featuring a branded tote, tank, and water bottle, and a signed copy of one of their favorite glow-getting books, The F*** It Diet by local author Caroline Dooner. Anyone up for the challenge has to enroll in Lumos’s unlimited month-to-month membership, which you can purchase here for $165 (Note: On January 1st and 2nd, they’ll be offering it for only $115.50!) Existing unlimited members will be automatically enrolled. Glow and get it, people!
Solidcore
2116 Chestnut Street, Rittenhouse
At Solidcore’s Rittenhouse location, you can turn your Sweatlana shakes into a bingo game. At the start of the month, all clients will receive a bingo board to try and mark off as many boxes as you can. If you complete one row, you get to bring a friend to class for free (must be a new client). Complete the full border and you’ll be entered to win a gift card. If you mark every space on your board, you’ll be eligible to win a private class for you and your BFFs! No sign-up necessary, but you must be a Solidcore client. And remember, this challenge is only happening at the Rittenhouse location.
Tuck Barre and Yoga
Multiple locations
Tuck Barre and Yoga is hosting two challenges at their four locations this January. Their “Fit as Tuck” requires you to take three classes per week for the entire month, and you can combo it as two yoga and one barre or two barre and one yoga. Anyone who completes this challenge will get a free “Fit as Tuck” shirt and will be entered to win a 12-class card. Then, on January 18th, they’ll be hosting “Tuckathon” — a class competition among all four studios. Each studio will host bounce/cardio barre, barreSHRED, and untuck (their Restorative/Yin Yoga yoga class), and whichever has the most clients to finish all three classes will get all proceeds donated to their charity of choice (and bragging rights, of course).
