Brussels sprouts are the vegetable you detested (or completely avoided) all throughout your childhood, but totally fell in love as an adult. And why shouldn’t you? Served crispy and slathered in sauce, we’d take them over French fries anyday. While you may not have as strong of a passion for this cruciferous vegetable as, say, the people comprising Philly’s Brussels Sprouts Club (yes, that is a real thing), there’s an abundance of spots in Philly to chow down on these tasty bulbs.

Below you’ll find eight dishes served right here in Philadelphia — some featuring Brussels sprouts that are simply roasted, others are topping pizza, and many are tossed in some variation of mouth-watering sauce. Consider this your go-to guide for when you have a hankering for some good ol’ Brussels sprouts.

The Mighty Brussel

Where: Rustica; 903 North 2nd Street, Northern Liberties

What: This robust dish combines two foods that could be seen as polar opposites, but actually come together quite flawlessly — Brussels sprouts and pizza. Gasp! Rustica tops a white pizza with roasted Brussels and caramelized onions for a simple, yet delicious, experience.

Pan Seared Brussel Sprouts

Where: Barbuzzo; 110 South 13th Street, Midtown Village

What: Warning all vegetarians and vegans: While this pile of Brussels sprouts looks totally delicious, it is not for you. This dish features the green bulbs du jour pan seared with Barbuzzo’s house-cured pancetta, lemon, garlic, breadcrumbs, and topped with a nice pile of caciocavallo (a fancy Italian cheese). These flavorful sprouts have a little crunch, a little creaminess, and a whole lot of flavor.

Crispy Brussels Sprouts

Where: Continental Midtown; 1801 Chestnut Street, Rittenhouse

What: This classic Philly spot has been around long enough to know how to please a palate, and their version of crispy Brussels sprouts is palate-pleasing indeed. As if the little green nuggets aren’t good enough on their own, you can slather them with a garlic yogurt sauce and a coriander dressing to amp up the flavor.

Charred Brussels Sprouts

Where: Vedge; 1221 Locust Street, Midtown Village

What: Because this dish is a creation coming out of the Vedge kitchen, we know it will be delicious. Here you’ll find kimchee-glazed Brussels sprouts that have been charred to a beautiful crisp, served alongside pickled mushrooms, and topped with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and scallions. Vedge’s happy hour menu is home to another Brussels sprout dish — shaved Brussels sprouts with a smoked mustard — which is super tasty and a mere $7!

Crispy Brussels Sprouts

Where: Sampan; 124 South 13th Street, Midtown Village

What: Spending a happy hour inside Sampan’s hip space is never a mistake — whether you’re there for the food or the drinks. These crispy Brussels sprouts make the cut on the happy hour food menu — which means you can try them for just $4 (they can also be found on Sampan’s regular menu for full price). The small cabbage-like balls are crisped up and seasoned with some fish sauce and chili, then topped with some puffed rice.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Where: Varga Bar; 941 Spruce Street, Washington Square West

What: Prepare to get seriously addicted to these bad boys. The sprouts and their leaves are crisped up and tossed in a balsamic reduction sauce (YUM), with some lemon and Parmesan cheese. Order it off the appetizer menu — as a snack, a side, or part of a balanced vegetarian dinner.

Kung Pao Brussels Sprouts

Where: Urban Saloon; 2120 Fairmount Avenue, Fairmount

What: Gina Mancuso of Core Fitness (and our resident Brussels sprout expert) thinks these babies are one of the best veggie dishes in Philly. The crispy sprouts are served in a sweet and spicy sauce and topped with crushed peanuts (oh hello, protein punch) and scallions. Chow down on these sweet and spicy jawns when you’re looking for a taste of Brussels sprouts done differently.

Charred Brussels Sprouts

Where: City Tap House; 3925 Walnut Street, University City

What: Mancuso loves this sprout-filled dish as well. The charred Brussels are served in a white miso sauce, topped with pomegranate and truffle salt — which seals the deal on this addicting dish. Full of the flavor and nutrients, these sprouts are a winner among cruciferous dishes.
