The Mind-Body Connection

Up to 80 percent of women experience “baby blues”—feeling sad or lost for two weeks after giving birth. But if these symptoms aren’t lightening up, it may be a sign of postpartum depression—a more serious condition that can be treated by a mental health professional. Here’s how to spot the difference between the two.

 Baby Blues

• Symptoms last 10 to 14 days after giving birth

• Anxiety

• Sadness

• Irritability

• Trouble sleeping

• Crying

• Reduced concentration

Postpartum Depression

• Symptoms can begin during pregnancy, during the first few weeks after giving birth, or even up to a year after giving birth

• Difficulty bonding with your baby

• Severe mood swings

• Noticeable changes in appetite—either eating much less or much more than usual

• Panic attacks

• Feelings of hopelessness, shame or guilt that you are not a good mom
