The Best Part of This Rainy Day Wedding at Bartram’s Garden? The Tater Tot Truck

Alanis Morissette once sang, “It’s like rain on your wedding day.” (Which, incidentally, is decidedly not ironic.) However, though Morissette was lamenting the pains of a rainy wedding day, for Washington Square West couple Sarah Wright and Ian Hincken, it turns out the weather just added character to one of the most special and memorable days of their lives. Sarah, from Princeton, and Ian, who had grown up in the city, first met as volunteers at the Philadelphia Museum of Art where they planned a fundraiser together.  On the night of their big event, a black tie gala, Ian remembers that he saw Sarah walk into the PMA’s gilded Great Stair Hall and “knew that he had fallen for her.” (How romantic is that?) Sarah remembers thinking that Ian was warm, friendly, and made Sarah feel welcome and at home.

The couple’s first date was for cocktails and oysters at Olde Bar in Old City, where the pair sat at the bar and talked to one another for hours. They would go on to date for two and a half more years, until one night, when they were walking through picturesque Washington Square Park to meet friends for dinner, Ian dropped to his knee in front of a streetlight. Sarah happily said yes to his proposal.

A year and a half after the pretty park proposal, the two wed in May 2018 in front of 200 of their closest family and friends in a tented outdoor ceremony at Philadelphia’s historic and beautiful Bartram’s Garden. They made the ceremony their own: they had two celebrants and no bridesmaids or groomsmen. Even though it was raining, it didn’t dull the decor or spirit of the day one bit. After the ceremony, the celebrating continued in a foliage-filled tented reception in the garden, where gold candles lined the long farm tables, and guests posed for photos on a Maggpie Rentals vintage grey loveseat in front of a balloon and floral photo backdrop.

The couple shared their first dance to “Romeo and Juliet” by Dire Straits, while guests sipped on two signature cocktails, a Pimm’s Cup , and a Ginger Bourbon Smash with muddled mint sprigs and lemon. Later, they dined on herb encrusted salmon and butternut squash ravioli. For dessert, guests enjoyed a lemon curd buttercream and a delicious chocolate baileys ganache cake that one of the bride’s best friends created. And, best of all, for a light-hearted late night snack, “The Tot Cart” was on-site serving a variety of gourmet tater-tots to guests. Tots in one hand and champagne in the other? Seems like the perfect party to us.

After the wedding reception and after party, the happy couple set out on their dream honeymoon to London and Croatia. They then returned to their home in Washington Square West, where Sarah works as an Event Coordinator for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and Ian is a Senior Specialist at Merck Research Labs.
