Sestak Announces Challenge to Toomey

Former congressman wants a rematch for the U.S. Senate seat.

Joe Sestak, the former congressman who beat then-U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter in the 2010 Democratic primary before losing the general election to Pat Toomey, announced Tuesday he’s taking another shot at the U.S. Senate seat.

The announcement came outside Independence Hall on Tuesday. After that, AP reports, Sestak began a very long walk.

The 63-year-old candidate is campaigning under the slogan: “Joe Sestak is walking in your shoes.” He plans to walk with a different group each day — including senior citizens, small business owners and law enforcement — until he reaches the western border of the state. Staffers said the effort would likely take until the end of the month.

And his campaign put out this video immediately after the announcement:

AP reports that Sestak starts out behind Toomey in the all-important money race: “Friends of Joe Sestak ended last year with about $1.5 million in cash on hand, compared with $5.8 million for Friends of Pat Toomey, according to federal campaign filings.”
