Picture of the Week: Grandma Gets Dolled Up

From photographer Isabel March:

Allison’s grandma, Ruth, is 88 years old; she’s a refugee from Nazi Germany. She came to Brooklyn from Berlin at age 13 and was on the last boat of Jewish refugees that got out of Germany.

She has four grandchildren and Allison is the only girl, so they’ve always had a special relationship—Ruth was Allison’s second call when she and Chris got engaged. Allison doesn’t think anyone was more excited than her grandmother at the news of her engagement; she called Allison back 30 minutes after Allison initially told her she was engaged because she decided she needed more details. Other than Allison, Ruth’s two favorite things are candy and celebrity gossip (she especially loves Teen Mom).

On Allison’s wedding day, Ruth sat in the room where the bride was getting ready, just in awe of how beautiful her granddaughter was. I loved the fact that Allison did her grandmother’s makeup for the wedding. Here, the three generations of women (in the foreground is Allison’s mom, her grandma’s daughter) are hanging out while grandma gets a little touch-up.
