The Electric Street Mural Dedication is Tonight in South Philly
Electric Street Mural Dedication @ Percy Street | Wednesday, August 17
Mural Arts usually sticks with paint for the many, many murals around town, but on a block of Percy Street in South Philly the look is a little different. Just south of 9th and Wharton, there’s a very cool neon art installation from artist David Guinn and lighting designer Drew Billiau, with funding from Mural Arts and the Knight Foundation. The dedication for the mural of sorts, dubbed “Electric Street,” is Wednesday, with food, music and possibly some insight into a multi-phase “Percy Street Project” Guinn mentioned on Instagram. Check out StreetsDept.com‘s photos of the installation here.
Sun Splashed After Hours @ The Barnes | Thursday, August 18
The Nari Ward: Sun Splashed exhibit is closing in a few days, so the Barnes is extending its hours on Thursday to give everyone a chance to check it out. Even better, evening admission to the exhibit will be free. If you want to learn more about the art you’re looking at, head to the auditorium at 6 p.m. for a talk entitled “Nari Ward: Entanglement.”
Motive: Murder! @ Plays and Players | Thursday, August 18
This light-hearted show from WGRA Radio Theatre is presented like a vintage radio broadcast, with live music from the Philadelphia Ukulele Orchestra.
Wanderings @ Jed Williams Gallery | Friday, August 19
Friday night is the closing reception for InLiquid’s Wanderings, an exhibit of abstract paintings and photography from artists Kit Donnelly, Deborah Leavy and Jessica Joy London. Bainbridge Street Barrel House, down the street, is offering drink specials afterward; just say you were wandering over from the gallery.
Paint Your Pet @ Dragonfly Farm | Friday, August 19
If Instagram isn’t sufficiently conveying your dog’s true spirit, let artist April Zay guide you through painting a pet portrait. The event, at Dragonfly Farms’ studio in Hamilton, New Jersey, is BYOB and you have to email in a photo of the pet you plan to capture on canvas first. Part of your ticket goes to animal charity Animal Friends for Education and Welfare. If supporting animals isn’t enough to sway you, how about this pleading pup?
Bitter Homes & Gardens @ The Oval | August 20-21
Experimental cabaret troupe The Bearded Ladies, who you might have seen entertaining the crowd at Eastern State Penitentiary’s Bastille Day Tastykake toss, revive their Bitter Homes & Gardens show for The Oval’s final weekend.
