Eagles Wake-Up Call: Lurie Calls 2011 a ‘Catch-Up Year’

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidIt’s tough to get an exact read on what Jeffrey Lurie’s expectations were in 2011.

The simplest way to put it is probably this: The Eagles owner was disappointed with the results, but he understands why the team wasn’t more successful.

“It didn’t create the kind of season we expected last year,” Lurie said Thursday, after mentioning how the team added Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Evan Mathis and Jason Babin last summer. “But we didn’t do it for a single year advancement. We did it for the long term and how to elevate a team. That was a unique chance to do that.”

A ‘Humbled’ Brian Westbrook Officially Retires As An Eagle

Villanova head coach Andy Talley said he only brought up Brian Westbrook‘s name to Andy Reid once. It was at a banquet, and it was short and to the point.

“I just shook hands with him, and I just said: ‘Our No. 20 is very special.’ I never said another word to him,” said Talley. He trusted the Eagles would see the value all on their own.

A decade later, Westbrook stood at the podium inside the NovaCare auditorium, in front of a large gathering of family, friends and former teammates, to deliver his retirement speech and be honored as one of the team’s all-time greats.

Reid Says Trade Phones Are ‘Very Active’

It’s that time of  year when teams are actively molding their rosters in search of that perfect blend of potency and balance. The Eagles just so happen to have an excess of talent at a couple key positions. It is a perfect case of supply and demand, and the calls are coming in fast and furious.

“They’re very active. People are…Howie [Roseman] is constantly on the phone,” said Andy Reid. “That’s how it works.”

Jenkins, Reid Talk Three Separate Times After Spat

Yes, Andy Reid and Cullen Jenkins are back on speaking terms. They are speaking quite a lot, actually.

Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins.Since their sideline spat, which was captured by television crews on Monday Night Football, player and coach have talked on three separate occasions. The first was in game. Next was on the plane ride back from New England, then again on Wednesday morning right after Reid’s press conference.

“I apologized to him on the plane and we talked a little bit. He talked about how he needs me, this team needs me to step up and be there,” said Jenkins.

Curious Reaction To Andy Reid Anger From Players

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidReporters couldn’t quite put their finger on it in the wake of Andy Reid‘s sideline blow-up in the direction of Cullen Jenkins. He has never been like that before, was our reaction, though that didn’t seem entirely true. We have seen him angry and animated plenty of times over the years.

What I think we were missing, which is more clear today, is that nobody has ever barked back. Here’s the video if you want to re-watch it. Normally Reid will say his piece, the player or coach will absorb the criticism, and life returns to normal. In this case, though, Jenkins rose off the bench and challenged the coach.

Tempers Flare In Reid-Jenkins Dust-Up

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidVeteran defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins did something to draw the ire of Eagles head coach Andy Reid, and cameras caught the heated exchange on television during the second quarter of tonight’s preseason game against the Patriots.

“It’s an emotional game,” Reid said afterwards. “He was fired up. I was fired up. Those things happen. Cullen is my primary leader on that defensive line so I count on him for a lot of things. He was upset, and I was upset. We talked about it afterwards, and we’re ok.”

Tearful Farwell For Tra Thomas

Tra Thomas kept it together for about 57 seconds.

Officially retiring as an Eagle at the Novacare Complex today, he watched a short highlight video of his time with the Birds before stepping to the podium.

He thanked owner Jeffrey Lurie, talked about transitioning from a defensive end to an offensive tackle in college and remembered when the Eagles drafted him in 1998.

But then Thomas got to his coach, Andy Reid.
