Vick Not Concerned About Job Security

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick.Andy Reid‘s comments about his quarterback situation earlier this week got so much attention that he felt it necessary to set the record straight with Michael Vick.

Asked at what point he will consider a QB change given the high turnover rate, Reid said Monday that Vick was his quarterback “right now” and that they would “evaluate as we go.” That got a lot of wheels turning.

“It was the way it was interpreted,” Reid on Wednesday. “That’s not what I had in mind. I’ve talked to Mike…to make sure we clarified. Bad semantics there.”

“We talked about it. We spoke about it,” said Vick. “But it wasn’t anything serious. We’re in a position where we have to look forward to this week, we have to get ready for this game. That’s what’s most important. Outside distraction can’t become a deterrent to this team.”

All 22: What We Learned About the Eagles’ Offense

Here’s what I saw from the Eagles’ offense after reviewing the All-22 footage from this week.

Before we get started, some overall themes. Number one, the coaches have to take a hit for the game-plan, which was built around the following ideas:

* That DeSean Jackson could get behind the Cardinals’ secondary for big plays.
* That an offensive line with two new guys (Dallas Reynolds and Demetress Bell) would be able to protect Michael Vick well enough to give him time to find receivers way downfield.
* That Vick would hit on the big plays when they were available.

Obviously, not all of those things happened, and hopefully below, you can see why.

Mike Check: Blitz Breakdown And 19 Hits On Vick

The Cardinals employed a couple different strategies to confuse the Eagles’ offense on Sunday. Here’s a look at Michael Vick’s performance against the blitz and what what happened on the 19 plays where the Birds’ quarterback ended up on the ground.

Reid Defends DeSean Jackson

There were two plays in Sunday’s game against the Cardinals involving DeSean Jackson that have been put under the microscope.

The first came early in the second quarter when Jackson appeared to stop tracking the ball after contact with corner Patrick Peterson along the right sideline. Instead, he looked to the officials and put his hands in the air while Michael Vick‘s pass dropped to the ground ahead of him. There was no flag on the play.

“I felt that I got a good route on him,” said Jackson. “Vick threw a great ball. I kind of got in his cushion and was about to run right around him. He kind of just threw his arms at me and dang near almost tackled me. I know if you rewind the play, you will probably see. It’s just something we have to continue to deal with. Once the ball is in the air, you have to play your technique. In my eyes, that’s not right. For a DB to grab you, it’s definitely frustrating. Especially when you can have a big play. Them missing it, it’s just very frustrating. But you just have to keep playing.”

Reid On QB Situation: ‘We’ll Evaluate As We Go’

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid.At what point, Andy Reid was asked at his day-after press conference, does he consider making a quarterback change if the turnovers continue to pile up the way they have through three games.

“Right now we’re with Michael [Vick], and that’s what we’re doing,” said Reid. “We’ll evaluate as we go.”

It was an interesting response from the head coach. It suggests that he has not shut the door on a quarterback switch if the struggles mount. It tells us that he’s open to maybe trying a life raft on for size if it’s clear the main vessel is taking on too much water.

Light Workload Leaves McCoy Shaking His Head

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.LeSean McCoy shook his head as the question came his way, undoubtedly frustrated by his light workload in Arizona Sunday.

You are considered by many to be a top three back in this league. Only five running plays were called in the first half. What gives?

“Um,” said McCoy, getting his politically-correct response in order. “Sometimes it goes like that. Who knows? If we got more carries or…I don’t live like that. I just go with the plays that are drawn up for us. We just got to do better, man. Simple as that.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Ref’s Error Leaves Reid Confused

On its surface, the referees’ holding call in the second quarter of Sunday’s Eagles-Cardinals game seemed pretty routine.

Darryl Tapp sacked quarterback Kevin Kolb, and the Cardinals were flagged. Anyone who’s watched football has seen this scenario play out plenty of times. The coach declines the penalty, the sack stands, and you move on to the next down.

So then why did the call cause a 4-minute, 59-second delay that left Eagles head coach Andy Reid confused afterwards?

Reid: ‘I Did a Terrible Job This Week’

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy ReidAndy Reid didn’t have many answers for why his team looked so bad in a 27-6 loss to the Cardinals Sunday afternoon.

“They played better than we did, clearly better,” Reid said. “They coached better, they played better, and so that’s my responsibility. I didn’t have my football team ready to play. They did, and my hats off to them. Field position, turnovers, you can’t play a good football team like that and have the turnovers that we had and not have field position. You’ve got to do a better job than that, and that again absolutely is on me. I’ve got to get my football team ready to play. I did a terrible job this week.”

Will Eagles’ Offense Use More No-Huddle?

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick. After Michael Vick hit tight end Brent Celek for a 23-yard completion against the Ravens, the Eagles’ offense showed its first wrinkle of the day: the no-huddle.

All week, reporters had questioned Juan Castillo and the team’s defensive players about the challenge of going up against Joe Flacco and the Ravens’ no-huddle offense. But Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg decided it was something they could try with Vick.

“The number one thing is I know Mike is very good at that,” Mornhinweg said. “He’s good at a fast tempo. I do think that some of our other players are excellent at it. So, just simply playing to their strengths, that’s all. That’s all it was. Now, there was a game plan. There were certain things that we certainly wanted to do and that enabled us to do some of those things well.”

Jaws: ‘Cardinals Will Give Eagles All They Can Handle’

Ron Jaworski believes the Eagles are in for a fight in Arizona. A guest on Mike & Mike this morning, Jaws spoke in glowing terms about the Cardinals’ attack.

“This Arizona defense is playing terrific,” said Jaworski. “I’m seeing some things that make me say, ‘Hmm, this defense could be really, really good.’  They love to play their 2-4-5 as a base — two down linemen, four linebackers, five defensive backs — and why not when you’ve got a Darnell Dockett and a Calais Campbell inside. Those two guys can pretty much handle the interior of any offensive line in the league.

“I think the Cardinals will give the Eagles all they can handle on Sunday.”

Demetress Bell Likely In Line For First Start

The Demetress Bell project may have been slower coming than many anticipated, but it’s in overdrive now.

Andy Reid said  that it “will be a stretch” for King Dunlap to be ready for the Cardinals. Dunlap suffered a hamstring strain against the Ravens and will not practice Wednesday. Reid indicated he could be sidelined through Friday, opening the door for Bell to likely get his first start in an Eagles uniform.

Eagles Turnover Rate Puts Them On Dangerous Path

If the Eagles were to keep up this pace, they would turn the ball over a staggering 72 times this season. Of course, everyone expects that number to level off as Michael Vick and the offense work the kinks out. But even if they finish with half that, it would still be among the highest totals during Andy Reid‘s tenure as head coach. And when the numbers are that high, the results aren’t pretty. Take a look:
