A Funky DIY Art Memorial Wedding in South Philly

Here at PW, we love a unique and funky wedding because, well, that’s what Philly is all about, right? Perfectly exemplifying Philly’s exceptional style is the autumnal union of Danielle Keller and Pat Findley at the Fleisher Art Memorial. From the groom’s maroon suit to the venue’s artsy vibes, this wedding is wonderfully bohemian and uniquely Philadelphian.

Danielle and Pat met in their early 20’s at a mutual friend’s house show just off of South Street. The two had seen each other around town, but never really got to talking. That night, conversation flowed—and they kept it alive well into the next day via text and AIM instant messenger.

Their first date happened about a week later, but the couple has differing views on what that first date actually was. Pat always thought it was when he asked Danielle to cut his hair (she was in hair school at that time). Danielle claims it was their trip to a local sushi spot, which was an especially memorable experience for her because it was her first time having sushi. 

After dating for eight years, Danielle and Pat decided to take the next step. Stateside is a special spot for this pair — it was where they decided they would be together forever — and when Pat was coming up with his proposal plan, he knew the East Passyunk eatery would have to be involved. The couple had dinner and drinks there, then decided to walk by the Singing Fountain. There, Pat got down on one knee, and even had a friend hiding in the bushes to capture the moment. Afterwards, the newly engaged pair headed to P.O.P.E (Pub on Passyunk East), where their friends and family were waiting to celebrate.

One year later, Danielle and Pat exchanged vows in a ceremony officiated by a good friend of Pat’s at the Fleisher Art Memorial in Queen Village. Their macrame altar backdrop was created by Danielle and her sisters, who also grew a special flower to incorporate into the flower girl’s bouquets.  Danielle and her bridesmaid’s flowers — a mix of Mink Protea, Silver Dollar Eucalyptus, Seeded Eucalyptus and Ornamental Cabbage — were from Whole Foods. 

The goal of the celebration for Pat and Danielle was for everyone — including them — to have a fun and memorable time. To that avail, the couple opted for a more relaxed dinner set-up in the way of different food stations: sliders, dim sum and comfort food. Pat’s brother and Danielle’s sister — pregnant and technically due one day before the wedding — delivered touching and funny speeches.  

After swaying to Paramore’s “The Only Exception” for their first dance, Danielle and Pat dove right into a decadent doughnut tower (their chosen alternative to the traditional cake). Tons of dancing and singing went down at their elegantly low-key reception, but what stuck out to the groom especially was the last two songs of the reception, during which the couple’s closest friends and family huddled on the dance floor to sing “Hey Ya” and “Alive with the Glory of Love.” They currently live in South Philly and have yet to decide on a honeymoon plan.
