Penn State Linebacker Sends Handwritten Note to Every NFL GM

This is kind of an old-fashioned way of winning a job, one you might not expect to work in the NFL, but maybe that’s what makes it worth trying: Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti has reportedly sent a handwritten note to all 32 general managers in the NFL, telling them about his passion for the game of football. Mauti has had both knees surgically repaired, but emerged as a leader on this year’s sanctions-weakened Penn State team, impressing observers.

Mauti spoke boldly and passionately, criticizing the NCAA while expressing his loyalty to Penn State. At a time when his teammates were allowed to jump ship with no penalty, he played a vital role in keeping most of the roster intact.

The challenge for Mauti now is to push beyond concerns about his two surgically repaired knees in advance of April’s NFL draft. His play on the field — and conduct off it — has spoken for itself, so it should just be a matter of WHEN, not if, Mauti’s name is called.

Mauti sent a message to NFL general managers by writing letters about his passion for football. But he also sent that message in more ways than one during his Penn State career.
