Daytime Soap Goes Lesbian

Get ready for Bold's first-ever lesbian story line

Popular daytime soap the Bold and the Beautiful is getting ready for its first-ever lesbian story line. Taking a page from The L Word, the long-running show is bringing back a popular character from Guiding Light to make the sapphic story line come to life next month.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Crystal Chappell – who was last seen as Olivia, the lesbian lover of Natalia (Jessica Leccia) on Guiding Light – will play Danielle, one of the moms of Karen Spencer (Joanna Johnson). As with most soaps, there’s a mystery surrounding the relationship. And that mystery will inspire the lesbian plot.

Bold and the Beautiful isn’t the first soap to introduce gay characters. Guiding Light, Days of Our Lives and As the World Turns have all dabbled in gay and lesbian story lines. And it’s spelled success for many of the shows that have faced a decrease in viewers in recent years.

The L Word‘s own Clementine Ford (real life lesbian daughter of Cybil Shepherd) has even played gay on The Young and the Restless as the recurring character of “Mac.”
