HRC Launches Americans for Equality

The new campaign features famous Americans speaking up for LGBT rights

HRC launched a new campaign this week aimed at spotlighting famous folks who take a stand for LGBT rights. Americans for Equality kicked off with the first video featuring Corey Booker, the mayor of Newark, N.J., who has said publicly that he will not officiate any weddings until same-sex couples can also marry and enjoy the same rights at straight couples.

“I support marriage equality because I believe in the 14th Amendment,” he says in the video, “equal protection under the law. And I support marriage equality because I support love – and in this nation we need a lot more of it.”

Other politicians, celebrities, athletes and activists are expected to join the campaign by pledging support for marriage equality.

“Americans for Marriage Equality will help drive the national conversation on marriage equality at a critical time as the issue moves through the electoral, legislative and judicial arenas,” explains Joe Solmonese, the HRC’s president. “We look forward to changing more minds.”
