Philly Teachers Choose Arbitration

The union representing Philly teachers has opted for arbitration concerning the 170 pending layoffs

Last week the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers took to the courts to combat the protection of younger instructors at Promise Academy schools. In lieu of laying off the younger teachers, the district allegedly opted to circumvent seniority rules to cut more tenured teachers elsewhere. Today, the district and the union agreed to have the matter settled by an arbitrator. This circumstance is part of a larger scale issue involving the nearly 3,000 expected layoffs intended to cut back on district spending to compensate for the proposed lack of state funding. [FOX 29]
