What We Love: Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret

It's all about a very tall drag queen (who can sing) and one of the best venues in town

Martha Graham Cracker

She’s tall. She’s hairy. She’s a drag queen, well, sorta. Martha Graham Cracker, who the Inquirer called “the drag queen king,” is performing tonight at gay-owned L’Etage (doors open at 8:15 p.m.). Stop by for some crepes and then head upstairs to witness Dito van Reigersberg of Pig Iron Theatre Company strut his stuff.

What makes this show so special (aside from the fact that Martha is one of the few who can belt out “And I am Telling You ” about as well as Jennifer Holliday) is that he does all of his own singing with accompaniment by a balls-to-the-wall backup band. Need more convincing? Here are five reasons why you should get off the couch, put down the potato chips, and check out this show.

1. Martha stole the show at the Troc recently by crooning power ballads (Annie Lennox!) during Pig Iron’s annual benefit.

2. Wigs!

3. So few drag queens actually sing. But Martha can. And does she ever. You won’t see any of that quivering, over-the-top lip syncing like they do on RuPaul’s Drag Race.

4. Martha refuses to shave her legs. Or chest.

5. It’s gay recommended and G Philly approved.
