Web Original: Critic’s Notebook: Winter Bounty
This week marks my last delivery of the CSA season. And I bet, like me, many of you are about to go through serious CSA withdraw. While there is no substitute for the summer’s harvest of lush tomatoes or fall’s crisp salad greens, locavores do have resources — winter CSAs (like Greensgrow’s popular and already sold-out version) and buying clubs — to get them through the cold-weather months with as much local food as possible. Here, two good other winter choices:
Winter Harvest
This Farm to City sponsored buying club — with 29 pick-up locations in the Philadelphia area — has an extensive weekly list, with 500 food and household items on offer throughout the season. And, the meat, eggs and dairy products are especially worth seeking out.
Hillacres Pride
This year, fans of Hillacres Pride, a regular at Philly and South Jersey farmers’ markets, can enjoy the farm’s meat, eggs and cheese all winter long through their winter delivery program.
