Health: An Exercise in Independence

Get a workout on your own terms — outside, in the grass, no gym membership. Mohawks optional

Punk Rock Boot Camp isn’t so much about tattoos and blue hair — it’s about offering an alternative to traditional fitness. The daily morning classes are pay as you go and have no gym affiliation. Because after all, Sid Vicious was no joiner.

Fitness trainer Brian Adoff created PRBC to be fun and inclusive, no matter what your size, shape or stamina. Each of the hour-long, fat-burning sessions — which are held in the fresh outdoor air at Penn’s Landing — starts off with a rousing round of everyone’s favorite childhood game: tag. (and you were worried about not being “punk” enough.)

Play time is followed up with some serious core strengthening moves, to the beats of the Ramones and the Sex Pistols, of course. Brian also includes a few minutes of relaxation and breathing exercises to help you chill after rocking out. In addition to three weekly boot camps, you can also give the totally punk interpretations of T’ai Chi and Pilates a try.

Drop-in weekdays at 6:30 a.m. for $15 or buy 20 classes for $185. For a limited time, get a month of unlimited classes, plus a free one-on-one session for $100.
