While we love the likes of Whole Foods and Trader Joes, sometimes our shopping needs go beyond what even they can provide in the way of wellness essentials — and, well, those nonessentials that we didn’t even know we needed. For those times when you just want to get lost in aisle of healthier snack foods, organic beauty products, or bulk herbs, we’ve rounded up five local wellness markets that will suit your needs.

Essene Market and Cafe

Where: 719 South 4th Street, Queen Village
What: Aside from carrying just about all of the healthy foods you can stuff a cart with — from organic produce to bulk foods to Origin Almond dairy-free shakes — this long-standing market-cafe combo serves deli-style seasonal prepared foods. Essene also hosts informational talks, classes, and more pertaining to all things health and wellness.

Penn Herb

Where: 601 North 2nd Street, Northern Liberties
What: If you’re looking for a rather obscure bulk wellness item, chances are that Penn Herb has it in multiple varieties. They’ve got the ground beet powder you’ve for baking brightly-colored baked goods, all sorts of seasonings and spices, and tons of other things that you’ve never heard of — and that’s just their alphabetized bulk section. Penn Herb also boasts a market area housing healthier-but-still-processed snacks, grocery items like pasta, and a cold case, which is home to things like tofu and kombucha. Additionally, Penn Herb possesses a very impressive vitamin and supplement section taking up at least four rows in the store and a CBD section that’s nothing to scoff at.

Herbiary

Where: 51 North 12th Street, located inside Reading Terminal Market
What: Herbiary is a trustworthy spot to visit when you’re overtaken with the urge to DIY some soap or lotion, Pinterest-style (hey, it happens). Score all sorts of essential oils, shea butter, Neti Pots, salves, sprays and so much more. There’s also plenty of relevant literature you can find there about holistic health and eastern practices. While they don’t sell food per se, you’re right in Reading Terminal Market where you can score tons of organic and locally grown fresh produce.

Riverwards Produce Market

Where: 2200 East Norris Street, Kensington
What: Riverwards, ICYMI, rules the produce game here in Philly — they’re known for having great prices, unique finds, and some of the best local and seasonal offerings. Additionally, they sell local processed foods — think Ox Coffee, Primal Supply Meats, and Shane chocolates.

Palo Santo Wellness Boutique Apothecary

Where: 1707 East Passyunk Avenue, East Passyunk
What: Maybe you’ve just done a session of yoga at Palo Santo or maybe you’re just in the neighborhood, either way, if you’ve got a need only herbs can fill, you’re in luck. The Palo Santo Wellness Boutique Apothecary comes equipped with a full-time herbalist that can help you create the blend of your dreams. The Apothecary sells healing herbs in bulk, as well as in amounts as small as an ounce. Additionally, the shop hosts workshops, tarot readings, reiki, and much more.
