And LA Fitness is leaving, too.

Looks like the New York-based David Barton Gym won’t be coming to 15th and Walnut after all. And the LA Fitness gym currently in that location is leaving, too.

David Barton Gym sent out an email to folks who’d signed up for memberships at the gym’s new location, that was supposed to open sometime this summer, saying that they are no longer planning to open at 1435 Walnut Street. To quote the email, “We are sorry to have to announce that DavidBartonGym will not be opening at 15th & Walnut due to circumstances that are out of our control. DavidBartonGym is still committed to Philadelphia and will be in touch with updates on our new direction.”

When we reached out to them to see what was going on, Ian Edwards, a spokesman for David Barton Gym, told us, “At this time, we don’t have an additional comments beyond the letter sent to members. That said, DavidBartonGym is committed to the Philadelphia market; once we have additional information to share, we’ll update you immediately.”

LA Fitness also sent out an email to their members saying, “As you may have heard, our lease for the club at 1435 Walnut Street in Philadelphia expires on May 31, 2015. We have been working to try to find another space within walking distance of the current club that we could relocate to, but unfortunately our efforts have not succeeded. The Walnut Street club will not be available after Thursday, May 28th … ”

So what will be going into that space? Well, Allan Domb, whose real estate agency Allan Domb Real Estate controls 1435 Walnut, told me in an email, “It is true that we just learned David Barton has defaulted and we are considering our options.” Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
