Ladies! Don’t Shave Your Armpits in August!

Save on razors, skip your next waxing appointment and stun the world (or at least your fellow beach-goers) with this statement for charity

If I didn’t shave my underarms in this wretched summer heat, I would throw a fit—a stinky, sweaty, scruffy fit. But if you’re a woman who is less particular about her hair-removal habits and are in the mood to do something for a good cause, you can take part in Armpits4August, a month-long event in which women will go au naturel in the armpit department to raise awareness for a condition called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Sure, it’s kind of a stunt, but this one actually makes sense: PCOS is a condition in which a woman’s hormones are extremely out of whack, disrupting the reproductive and other bodily systems; in fact, it’s a leading cause of infertility in women. Excessive hair growth is one of the common symptoms for PCOS, so not shaving is one way to show solidarity for people afflicted with the condition. Participants are encouraged to grow underarm hair for a month and ask friends and family to sponsor them to raise money for Verity, a charity for people with PCOS.

Hey, if men take part in Movemeber, then ladies? August is all ours.
