8 Common Mistakes That Are Screwing With Your Teeth

The older I get, the more I realize why people loathe going to the dentist. I think it says less about dentists and more about the nature of teeth weakening as they get older. Regardless, it seems that every time I sit in that way-too-slowly-reclining chair, I get worse and worse news. As it turns out, I have no one to blame but myself — I do things every single day that my dentist wants to wring my neck for. To me, they’re harmless … but not in her opinion.

Here, Blue Bell-based dentist Dr. Mary Puleo gets real about common mistakes you’re probably making that can screw with your teeth in a big way.

What You Should Be Doing in the Shower (But Aren’t)

Out of pure necessity, showering might be the most consistent beauty regimen anyone follows. I mean, you can get away without doing an exfoliating mask on the regular, but there’s only so long you can go without showering before you start to see (er, smell) the negative consequences. That being said, while showering is already probably (hopefully) a solid part of your routine, that doesn’t mean your routine can’t be improved upon.

We tend to fall into patterns of showering without even thinking about them. Think: always rinsing conditioner out at the tail-end of a shower, which can lead to bacne (nooooo!), or showering every single day, which can lead to dry skin (no, thank you). Routine is tough to break, but there are actually some really amazing tweaks you can make to get more out of your showers. Take note of these recommendations from Philly skin-care experts, and start getting more out of your shower time.  Read more »

9 Awesome Vegan Beauty Products to Have on Your Radar

vegan beauty productsWhen it comes to the vegan lifestyle, it doesn’t have to stop at the food you consume. For people who believe in animal rights enough to stop eating animal byproducts altogether, it only makes sense to extend that same care into your beauty routine. The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Philly: Gluten-Free Pizza Edition

The Veggie #1 from Jules Thin Crust, mentioned by Ashley Coyne | Photo via Instagram

*Welcome to our occasional feature, The Best Thing I Ever Ate in Philly. We’re on a mission to find the most delicious, indulgent restaurant dishes for every kind of dieter—whether you’re gluten-free, vegan, raw and more. We’re all about occasional splurges, and that’s what this series is all about. We’ll talk to foodies to find out their favorite eats, but feel free to add yours in the comments. Bon appétit!

Finding gluten-free pizza that resembles anything close to the ooey-gooey, crunchy-where-it-should-be, just-doughy-enough goodness you’ve grown accustomed to after a lifetime of glorious, glutinous pizza can be quite difficult. More than difficult, actually — it can be downright disheartening to get hyped for gluten-free pizza time after time, only to be let down so hard by the GF alternatives that can look and feel (and taste) like cardboard. Trust me, I did the gluten-free thing for a long time, and the best option I came across was the gluten-free pizza from Papa John’s — which shouldn’t be anyone’s best pizza option, if you ask me.

Because we do not take pizza or the gluten-free life lightly, we turned to five Philly gluten-free-eating aficionados to direct us to their top gluten-free pizza finds around Philly. Tuck this post away for your next movie night — you won’t even miss the real stuff (or the horrible stomach pains that would accompany it). And note, these all pair wonderfully with a gluten-free beer (or two).  Read more »

It may only be a relatively balmy 39 degrees outside right now, but when you get caught in an urban wind tunnel or your umbrella breaks mid-rainstorm, it can feel more like the Arctic Circle. The best way to combat that chilled-to-the-bone feeling? A nice, piping hot cup of soup. Is there anything more quintessentially winter than holding a bowl of soup between your thawing fingertips, delicious steam lazily wafting up towards your nose? Just thinking about it makes me want go ice skating in Dilworth Park — not because I particularly enjoy ice skating, but because I want that bring-me-back-to-life experience that only sip-worthy soups can deliver after being out in the cold for too long.

We asked some of our favorite (similarly soup-obsessed) Philly fitness folks to dish on their go-to, mouth-watering, sip-worthy soups around the city for the next time you’re craving a cup of comfort. Whether you’re sick in bed, just getting back from a cold day outside, or simply want to get into a hearty bowl of comfort, this sip-worthy soup list is for you.

Fact: Talking about tampons can be awkward. But lately, organic tampon brands like LOLA and Cora (which started in Philly) — along with alternative forms of feminine care products, like THINX period panties, menstrual cups, etc. — have been generating a lot of buzz in the health-conscious world. After all, we care about the food that goes into our bodies, as well as the beauty and skincare products we use on it. Why would your feminine care products be any different?

We were curious to learn more about WTF is up with organic tampons (and we’re sure you are, too) so we turned to two experts who know what they’re talkin’ about: Dr. Jerrold Snyder, a gynecologist with Women’s Specialists of Bucks County, and Alex Friedman, a Wharton grad who has some skin in the organic tampon game after co-founding LOLA organic. See what we learned below.

Unless you’re talking about a farmers’ market or a community yoga class, the words “cheap” and “healthy” aren’t usually found in the same sentence together — especially when it comes to finding lunch in the city. It’s hard out there for a health-conscious human on the go, who may or may not have skipped their Sunday-night meal prep for the week. (Been there.)

But guess what? You actually don’t need to decide between eating lunch and paying your rent, nor do you need to settle for a limp and lonely bag of lettuce with your tears as dressing. Here are nine fantastic, delicious, go-to healthy lunch options that Philly fitness pros turn to, ranging from stacked sandwiches to crave-worthy stir-frys. And the best part is — drumroll, please — they’re all under $10. Yup, turns out you can have your (rice) cake and eat it too. Read more »
