Reid On QB Situation: ‘We’ll Evaluate As We Go’

Philadelphia Eagles Head Coach Andy Reid.At what point, Andy Reid was asked at his day-after press conference, does he consider making a quarterback change if the turnovers continue to pile up the way they have through three games.

“Right now we’re with Michael [Vick], and that’s what we’re doing,” said Reid. “We’ll evaluate as we go.”

It was an interesting response from the head coach. It suggests that he has not shut the door on a quarterback switch if the struggles mount. It tells us that he’s open to maybe trying a life raft on for size if it’s clear the main vessel is taking on too much water.

Light Workload Leaves McCoy Shaking His Head

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.LeSean McCoy shook his head as the question came his way, undoubtedly frustrated by his light workload in Arizona Sunday.

You are considered by many to be a top three back in this league. Only five running plays were called in the first half. What gives?

“Um,” said McCoy, getting his politically-correct response in order. “Sometimes it goes like that. Who knows? If we got more carries or…I don’t live like that. I just go with the plays that are drawn up for us. We just got to do better, man. Simple as that.”

Vick’s Take On the Game-Changing Fumble

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick. There were plenty of miscues for the Eagles in their 27-6 loss to the Cardinals, but the game-changer was aMichael Vickfumble at the end of the first that was returned 93 yards for a touchdown.

Down 17-0, the Eagles set up at the Cardinals’ 1-yard-line, facing a 3rd-and-goal with six seconds left before halftime.Andy Reiddecided to trust his quarterback and run one final play. The thought process was simple: Get rid of the ball quickly, even if there’s no one open. Worst-case scenario, kick the field goal and go into the half down 17-3.

Obviously, the worst-case scenario turned out to be quite different. Safety Kerry Rhodes blitzed Vick from his front side, sacked him and forced a fumble, which James Sanders returned for the score, putting the Cardinals up, 24-0.

Will Eagles’ Offense Use More No-Huddle?

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick. After Michael Vick hit tight end Brent Celek for a 23-yard completion against the Ravens, the Eagles’ offense showed its first wrinkle of the day: the no-huddle.

All week, reporters had questioned Juan Castillo and the team’s defensive players about the challenge of going up against Joe Flacco and the Ravens’ no-huddle offense. But Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg decided it was something they could try with Vick.

“The number one thing is I know Mike is very good at that,” Mornhinweg said. “He’s good at a fast tempo. I do think that some of our other players are excellent at it. So, just simply playing to their strengths, that’s all. That’s all it was. Now, there was a game plan. There were certain things that we certainly wanted to do and that enabled us to do some of those things well.”

Mornhinweg May Be Gambling More Than Ever With Solid ‘D’

Some subscribe to the NFL philosophy that if your defense is dominant, your offensive approach should be more on the conservative side.  Marty Mornhinweg is decidedly not among them.

“Now why would you ever do that?” an animated Mornhinweg asked.

Eagles Turnover Rate Puts Them On Dangerous Path

If the Eagles were to keep up this pace, they would turn the ball over a staggering 72 times this season. Of course, everyone expects that number to level off as Michael Vick and the offense work the kinks out. But even if they finish with half that, it would still be among the highest totals during Andy Reid‘s tenure as head coach. And when the numbers are that high, the results aren’t pretty. Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Two Kolb What-Ifs

Let’s take a trip down memory lane today, shall we?

Before Sunday, the last time the Eagles faced the Ravens was on Nov. 23, 2008.

The game is less remembered for its result – a 36-7 Baltimore victory – than what happened when Andy Reid’s offense took the field in the second half.

Donovan McNabb was in his 10th season with the Eagles, ninth as a full-time starter. From the moment he took over as a rookie until that day at M&T Bank Stadium, he had never been pulled because of performance. But with the Eagles trailing 10-7 at halftime and McNabb struggling (8-for-18 for 59 yards and a pair of interceptions), Reid decided to go with Kevin Kolb.

With Game On the Line, Vick Comes Through

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael VickWhen observers discussed the difference in the 2010 and 2011 versions of Michael Vick all offseason, the conversations almost always focused on turnovers.

But there was another difference: his performance in the fourth quarter.

In 2010, Vick threw six touchdowns and no interceptions in the final 15 minutes of games. He led four fourth-quarter comebacks and engineered three game-winning drives. Last season, however, was a different story. Vick threw three touchdowns and three interceptions in the fourth. He led zero fourth-quarter comebacks and zero game-winning drives.

We’re only two games into the 2012 season, but so far, the results from Vick in crunch time are encouraging.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Graham Hungry For More

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Brandon GrahamHere are the number of snaps each Eagles defensive end received in Week 1 against the Browns:

Trent Cole: 42
Jason Babin: 41
Darryl Tapp: 20
Phillip Hunt: 15
Brandon Graham: 4

Four.  That’s not a lot to work with for the former first-round pick, who has fought back from microfracture knee surgery and a torn ACL to try and get back in the mix. But Graham says he’s thankful for every morsel he’s fed.
