The Michael Vick-Chip Kelly Conundrum

If Michael Vick is going to be Chip Kelly‘s guy, he will have to change. There is just no getting around that.

How can Kelly’s offense work if his quarterback is keeping the ball in his hands twice as long as he wants him to? This much seems obvious: Vick is going to have to adapt. Kelly believes the 32-year-old can do it.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Mike Vick Versus the Ninja Stick

Trainer Tom Anderson wasn’t focused on who was responsible for the hits, but rather on how to limit the punishment when those hits came. So he made boxing — and the art of avoiding the brunt of the blow — a central part of the training regimen.

In one exercise, Anderson would stand about two feet away from the quarterback and swing a foamed “Ninja stick” at his head or upper body, forcing Vick to turn his shoulders and “get skinny” to minimize the impact. In another, Anderson put an elastic band around Vick’s ankles and would have him slide from side-to-side while punching at a stationary bag. (Anderson wouldn’t let Vick make contact with the bag. “We’re not tuning up your knuckles,” he told him, “we’re making you more elusive.”) Blow the whistle. Slide, punch, slide. Thirty seconds on, 30 seconds off.

Vick, Foles And Barkley: Assessing the QB Situation

There are a lot of questions about what’s going on with Chip Kelly and the Eagles’ QB situation, especially after the team spent a fourth-round pick on Matt Barkley over the weekend.

So here’s my attempt to make sense of it all (or at least some of it). Let’s go player-by-player, starting with the new guy.

Vick: We’ve Done A Lot Of Read Option

If there was any doubt that the read option was coming to Philly, Michael Vick erased it Wednesday.

“We’ve done a lot of read option,” said Vick. “It’s part of what we do. I’ve been working very hard in the weight room, and all the quarterbacks have as well. We’re trying to make sure we’re physically ready for whatever needs to be done in this offense.”

And so we know that the option game is being implemented. And we also know that Nick Foles is splitting first-team reps with Vick in what Chip Kelly describes as a wide-open quarterback competition. How does that work?

Kelly Kicks Off Quarterback Competition

A feisty and fast-talking Chip Kelly took the podium Tuesday, clearly energized fresh off  his first practice as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. He did some friendly sparring with the media, threw a couple jabs, and deftly maneuvered to avoid being pinned on the ropes — especially when it came to his quarterback situation.

Kelly is far from ready to give one QB a nod over another, and said that Michael Vick, Nick Foles and even Dennis Dixon worked with the first team during the team’s minicamp session.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: DeSean, Vick Talk Geno Smith

The Geno Smith conversation is not just being had on talk radio, in bars, and on your favorite blog. Turns out, it has seeped through the NovaCare walls and into the weight room as well.

“I have been hearing about that, honestly, too. Geno Smith was a great player at West Virginia. He has done some great things. He could probably fit right in with this offense,” said DeSean Jackson in an interview with NFL Network.

Kelly: It Wasn’t Always Vick’s Fault In 2012

During a brief interview with Steve Wyche of NFL Network, Chip Kelly touched on a variety of topics, including Michael Vick, the draft and roster-building.

Asked about Vick, Kelly pointed to the Eagles’ banged-up offensive line in 2012.

“Mike can still play,” he said. “When you evaluate a quarterback, you have to evaluate everything. The losing of three or four offensive linemen for the season, he took a lot of hits. You as a quarterback, when you drop back, hope that guy’s going to be blocked, and when we miss a block and he ends up getting hit, it’s not the quarterback’s fault.”

Chip Kelly On Operating Without A Franchise Quarterback

PHOENIX — Chip Kelly referred to quarterback as the most important position on the field multiple times during his 70-minute session with reporters at the owners meeting Wednesday.

He also made it clear that he does not view it as a death sentence if your team does not have a franchise signal-caller.

“We still have to play,” said Kelly. “So if you don’t have a franchise quarterback you can’t just throw your hands up before the game and go, ‘We don’t have Tom Brady so we’re screwed today.’ Every coach’s job is to put their players in position to make plays. You have to adjust and you have to adapt, and I think that’s where people make mistakes.”

Kelly referenced Mike Shanahan drastically altering the offense when RGIII got hurt and Kirk Cousins went in. He also brought up John Fox making the playoffs with Tim Tebow and then Peyton Manning in Denver. Two different skill levels and styles, but Denver was able to make alterations and maximize the talent at that position.

Now we come to a most interesting part of this conversation.
