Will Eagles Turn To DeSean To Return Punts?

In the offseason, the Eagles made moves to address their return game, but so far, the results have been unimpressive.

Let’s start with the punt returns. Damaris Johnson has been the man through five games, and his opportunities have been limited. Johnson’s fair caught nine punts (tied for most in the league) and returned another eight. His longest return has gone for just 13 yards.

So is it time for DeSean Jackson to get a shot?

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Five Numbers That Matter

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.Let’s break out five Eagles numbers that matter today:

1 – The number of blitzes Juan Castillo dialed up against the Giants in the teams’ Week 11 meeting last season. Eli Manning dropped back to pass 38 times in that game, and the Eagles sent extra pressure just once. They were still able to sack Manning three times and hit him on 10 occasions with their front four. That’s the formula. By my count, the Eagles have blitzed 16 times in the first three weeks. Opposing quarterbacks are 6-for-13 for 109 yards when they send extra pressure. The Eagles also have two sacks (and there was an offensive pass interference penalty). But there’s always risk when you blitz. Of those six completions, three have gone for 20+ yards. DeMeco Ryans has been the most frequent blitzer. He’s gone after the quarterback 14 times, per Pro Football Focus. No other Eagles has blitzed more than five times.

All 22: What We Learned About the Eagles’ Offense

Here’s what I saw from the Eagles’ offense after reviewing the All-22 footage from this week.

Before we get started, some overall themes. Number one, the coaches have to take a hit for the game-plan, which was built around the following ideas:

* That DeSean Jackson could get behind the Cardinals’ secondary for big plays.
* That an offensive line with two new guys (Dallas Reynolds and Demetress Bell) would be able to protect Michael Vick well enough to give him time to find receivers way downfield.
* That Vick would hit on the big plays when they were available.

Obviously, not all of those things happened, and hopefully below, you can see why.

Tuck: We Don’t Forget What McNabb, Jackson Did

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean JacksonThe fun part about the Eagles-Giants rivalry is that the players seem to genuinely dislike each other.

With players often switching teams and sharing agents, you don’t see a lot of that in sports anymore.

Yesterday, we wrote about the LeSean McCoyOsi Umenyiora ongoing back-and-forth. And now, defensive lineman Justin Tuck has offered his opinion on some past Eagles-Giants moments that still irk him.

Reid Defends DeSean Jackson

There were two plays in Sunday’s game against the Cardinals involving DeSean Jackson that have been put under the microscope.

The first came early in the second quarter when Jackson appeared to stop tracking the ball after contact with corner Patrick Peterson along the right sideline. Instead, he looked to the officials and put his hands in the air while Michael Vick‘s pass dropped to the ground ahead of him. There was no flag on the play.

“I felt that I got a good route on him,” said Jackson. “Vick threw a great ball. I kind of got in his cushion and was about to run right around him. He kind of just threw his arms at me and dang near almost tackled me. I know if you rewind the play, you will probably see. It’s just something we have to continue to deal with. Once the ball is in the air, you have to play your technique. In my eyes, that’s not right. For a DB to grab you, it’s definitely frustrating. Especially when you can have a big play. Them missing it, it’s just very frustrating. But you just have to keep playing.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: DeSean And the Ghost Of Cardinals Past

This is DeSean Jackson‘s opportunity to make amends.

Hours before the Eagles and Cardinals kicked off at Lincoln Financial last season, news broke that Jackson had been told to stay home by Andy Reid after showing up late to multiple Saturday meetings. The sour attitude over his contract situation had finally caught up with him, and with  the team. With the receiver out of the equation and Michael Vick playing with broken ribs, the Eagles fell 21-17. One more win that season and the Eagles would have won the division. There would be a different Super Bowl champ other than the Giants.

DeSean Jackson Fined 10K For Throwing Punch

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean JacksonDeSean Jackson was fined $10,000 for throwing a punch at Ravens cornerback Cary Williams Sunday, according to the league offices.

It was also confirmed that Cullen Jenkins was hit with a $7,875 penalty for unnecessary roughness.

Jackson detailed the dust-up on 97.5 The Fanatic.

“The Baltimore Ravens, they’re one of those defenses where they feel they are the big brother where they feel they can punk everybody and do whatever they feel is right,” said Jackson. “I caught a ball and a defender got in my face and I pushed him out of my face. It went from one push to another push and eventually went to some blows. A lineman grabbed me from behind. Gladly nobody was thrown out.

“That got me pumped up. I told my boy Ray Lewis, ‘Man, you better get your corner over there before I torture him all day.’”

Jeremy Maclin Returns To Practice

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jeremy MaclinJeremy Maclin returned to the practice field Thursday and was listed as a limited participant after sitting Wednesday out.

The receiver was knocked out of the Ravens game with a hip pointer. He originally sustained the hip injury against the Browns in Week 1. Maclin said he was in a good deal of pain following Sunday’s game but has been making progress.

With Maclin returning, King Dunlap was the only member of the Eagles sidelined for Thursday’s practice. Dunlap is dealing with a hamstring strain and it’s considered a stretch to think he will be ready play against the Cardinals. Demetress Bell will likely get the start at left tackle in his place.

Colt Anderson (knee) did not practice Wednesday but was back as a full participant. DeSean Jackson (hamstring) was full-go as well after being limited the day before.
