SEPTA to Detour for Holiday Events on Saturday

Events in West Philly, Chestnut Hill and Spring Garden will force detours on several SEPTA bus routes.

SEPTA bus routes near Memorial Hall in West Fairmount Park, on Spring Garden Street in Northern Liberties, on 9th Street in the Italian Market and along Germantown Avenue in Chestnut Hill will be detoured for part of the day on Saturday, December 12th, in order to accommodate four holiday-themed events.

The first detour runs from 7 to 11 a.m. while the Chestnut Hill Holiday Parade takes place along Germantown Avenue between Willow Grove and Chestnut Hill avenues. Routes 23 and 77, which approach Chestnut Hill Loop from the south, will detour via Seminole Street, then continue up Germantown Avenue to a temporary loop routing via Northwestern Avenue and Thomas Road to turn back for the return trip (same detour in both directions). Routes 94 and 97, which approach the loop from the north, will detour along Hillcrest Avenue between Bethlehem Pike and Germantown Avenue. Route L buses bound for Erdenheim will use Stenton Avenue in both directions; buses headed for Willow Grove Park Mall will follow the Seminole Street detour northbound, then continue up Germantown Avenue, and follow Hillcrest Avenue to Stenton Avenue southbound.

The second detour begins at 8 a.m. and ends at noon, when the Ugly Sweater 5K Run is set to end in West Fairmount Park. For the duration of the race, Route 38 buses that normally operate on Memorial Hall Drive to the Please Touch Museum will remain on Parkside Avenue instead.

The third detour, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m., will take the Route 43 bus off Spring Garden Street between 2nd and 6th streets while the Running of the Santas takes place. Westbound buses will head south on 2nd Street to Callowhill, west on Callowhill to 9th, south on 9th to Vine, west on Vine to 11th, then north on 11th to Spring Garden. Eastbound buses will head north on 7th, east on Girard, then south on 2nd to Spring Garden.

The last detour takes place between 5 and 11 p.m., when 9th Street will be closed between Wharton and Federal streets for an ice carving festival in the Italian Market. Northbound Route 47M buses will use 5th Street from Snyder Avenue to Lombard Street.

The easiest way to keep track of what’s running where when is to check the System Status page on the SEPTA website or app.
