Lesbian Lawmaker to Run for Governor of Maryland

Openly gay State Delegate Heather Mizeur announced today that she will run in the state's 2014 governor's race.

Openly gay Maryland State Delegate Heather Mizeur has announced that she will run for governor in the state’s 2014 race. If elected, she would not only become Maryland’s first female to win the position, but the country’s first out person to be elected governor.

Mizeur will come into the race after having served on Maryland’s House of Delegates since 2007, where, LGBTQ Nation reports, she has “called for a thorough study of health, environmental and economic impacts before allowing hydraulic fracturing, the drilling technique commonly known as fracking.” As a candidate for governor, she says she will focus on job creation and improving schools.

Mizeur says her run is “a sign of how far we’ve come as a state that an openly gay person can be a serious candidate for governor, but the fact that we’re still talking about it is a sign that we still have a ways to go.”

We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes on this one. Stay tuned.
