IRS Leaks Thousands of Social Security Numbers by Accident

The IRS has apparently gotten into the government information leak game, too, having recently exposing up to 2,318 Social Security Numbers, according to a watchdog group. The information breach, which leaked the numbers online for a full 24 hours, occurred during the processing of tax forms for nonprofit political groups dubbed 527s. The 527 database, a favorite tool among political reporters, contained some 319 files harboring sensitive information that should have been redacted. Public.Resource.org, which performed the audit, called the IRS’s security “unprofessional and amateur” (redundant, no? Those security guys are all about redundancy, though) and is currently requesting the database be shut down to stop any further problems. But, yes, Edward Snowden is the problem. [Mashable]
