Sandy Hook Students to Sing “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl
26 children from Sandy Hook Elementary School–the number is symbolic–will sing “America the Beautiful” at this year’s Super Bowl, just before Alicia Keys performs the national anthem. As the New York Times points out, there are some angry commenters (and surely pundits to foll0w) arguing this is an exploitative “politicization” of a bipartisan event. I.e., the Super Bowl is using the kids to convince politicians to take your guns away. Funny, I don’t remember anyone arguing that U2’s 2002 performance, in which the victims of 9/11 were honored, was a tacit endorsement of the war in Afghanistan. Below, a video of the kids performing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” a couple weeks ago.
