Local Supermarket Chain to Get a Big Break With Former Newtown Genuardi’s

Earlier this year, Safeway Inc. announced it would be selling off the 27 Genuardi’s locations in the area. Originally, Langhorne’s McCaffrey’s looked set to land the Newtown location, but talks fell through when a bigger, Giant suitor came along. As Carlisle-based Giant began the process of snatching up a slew of former Genuardi’s locations, the Federal Trade Commission stepped in and said that the chain couldn’t occupy the Newtown location because it would leave only Giant and Acme in the area and allow for the possibility of price-gauging. Giant gave McCaffrey’s a call, and the small-town chain is set to finalize a deal for the store sometime in July. [Inquirer]
