Philly Boxing Legend Benton Dies

Succombs to pneumonia at age 78

George Benton is considered by many to be the greatest middleweight fighter to never hold a title. He boxed from 1949 to 1970 and had 36 knockouts before he was shot and had to give up boxing. “The Professor,” as he was commonly known, was a member of the World Boxing Hall of Fame for his work as a trainer. He worked with such greats as Joe Frazier, Leon Spinks and Evander Holyfield. Benton died Monday after a battle with pneumonia. [ESPN]
