Miley’s for Gay Marriage
We never thought we’d write these words: Miley Cyrus rules. But it’s true. And here’s why.
The teen singer and former Hannah Montana TV star caught our attention last month after tweeting about presidential hopeful and former Pa. senator Rick Santorum who has made no bones about his contempt for LGBT rights. “Jesus loves you and your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! I am Christian and I love you – gay or not. Because you are no different than anyone else! We are all God’s children,” she wrote.
Even though we may have always secretly liked that “Party in the USA” song of hers (and who didn’t love the video it inspired of those cute boys in Fire Island?), we really had no way to know that Cyrus would become such an outspoken friend to the gay community. Considering she has over a million-and-a-half followers on Twitter, every statement in favor of gay rights counts.
And there have been quite a few.
Just yesterday, the teen sensation took to Twitter to support marriage equality in response to some recent headlines: “You know the world is skewed when people get away with murdering children but we cant (sic) get gay marriage legalized in the state of California.” This came after the headline-making acquittal of Casey Anthony for the alleged murder of her two-year-old daughter Caylee.
The gay community needs more friends like Cyrus. Not only does she identify as Christian, but she continues to be outspoken for the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in this country despite outrage from conservative groups. OneMillionMoms scolded the pop star, accusing Cyrus of sending “the wrong message to our children who are influenced by this teenage megastar.”
But it hasn’t stopped her. In fact, the singer and former TV star started voicing her support for gay marriage more than two years ago during the Miss USA pageant when Carrie Prejean was criticized for her anti-gay marriage stance.
Miley wrote to Perez Hilton about the situation on Twitter: “Jesus loves you AND your partner and wants you to know how much he cares! that’s like a daddy not loving his lil boy cuz he’s gay and that is WRONG and very sad! like i said everyone deserves to be happy (sic).”
We couldn’t agree more.
