Philosophy:  “There’s no such thing as a totally sustainable business. No matter who you are, everything has a negative impact on the environment. It’s just a matter of how much good you do. I thought, ‘Let’s make every business transaction help the environment.’”

What I’m Wearing: “One hundred sixty-seven is the average number of water bottles the typical person uses in a year. One of the main things we collect at cleanups is water bottles.” (T-shirt, $29.50 at unitedbyblue.com)

On My Feet: “These are Simple shoes (simpleshoes.com). The bottom is made of recycled tires and inner tubes, and the inside is made of recycled carpet lining and organic cotton and hemp."

Gear: “We have a guy who supplies us with old lobster crates that we repurpose to carry supplies to cleanups. We also use them for store displays.”

Action: “For every organic cotton t-shirt or bag we sell”—at places like Urban Outfitters and Whole Foods—“we remove one pound of trash from the world’s oceans and waterways through company cleanups. This year, we have 50 cleanups scheduled in 25 states, and we estimate we’ll clean up 100,000 pounds of trash.”

Puppy Love: “My dog, Zoey, has been to quite a few cleanups. She makes all the volunteers happy.”
