Ask Monica: My Favorite Philly Father’s Day Ideas

Plus, should you split the check on a first date?

Hey Monica,
I am in my early 30s and am wondering if women should offer to split the tab for dinner on a first date? — Z.W.

I think it shows good manners to make the offer, and most men will appreciate the overture. Having said that, hopefully your date will decline and cover things. By picking up the check, he is showing that he is a gentleman and enjoyed himself. If he accepts your gesture, chances are that he did not have a good time or he is just frugal. Call me old school, but first impressions really matter. It is nice that you offer to pay half, but the man really should pick up the tab on a first date.

Monica, can you help me out? I really need to hit a home run on Father’s Day. What are your suggestions for a go to gift? — C.P.

To start with do not put him in charge of the grill! This should be his day to stretch out in the hammock and chill. Let’s go over some ideas for gifts. For the techie dad try Springboard Media on Walnut St. just above 22nd St. If your guy needs to shed his spare tire, a gift certificate to the Sporting Club at the Bellevue is a good way to go. For the sharp dresser, I recommend Benjamin Lovell Shoes and the Ralph Lauren store. If he is a sports fan, try tickets to the Philadelphia Union soccer team. They have a brand new stadium in Chester. Big matches like Manchester United are coming up over the summer. For the best gift of all, take two Advil and pay a visit to Cara at Body Restoration, or drive to the burbs and see Rita at Salon Asya in Bala Cynwyd. From a full Brazilian to a modest landing strip, these women will give you the best bikini wax ever. I guarantee he won’t complain about the price!
