Summer Food: The Tastes of Summer: Edible Flowers

Some flowers actually are pretty enough to eat. And now, thanks to the upswing in local and pesticide-free farmers, tasty flowers are easier to find at restaurants and markets. Mixed bouquets of edible beauties are sold at Reading Terminal Market’s Iovine Brothers (12th and Arch streets; 215-928-4366) and usually contain such blossoms as minty pansies, pungent nasturtiums, sweet lavender and herbal marigolds. These colorful blooms turn up on menus all summer; at Rouge (205 South 18th Street; 215-732-6622), they add color and earthy flavor to salads.
