Now in its 18th year, Bi Visibility Day will now have a rally in Philly for the first time.

For its historical significance and attention to inclusion, this week’s LGBTQ event of the week is the Philly Bi Visibility Rally. International Bi Visibility Day has been celebrated nationally since 1999, but this will be the first time Philadelphia has thrown an official rally for it. Sponsored by the Office of LGBT Affairs, the event plans to unite bisexuals and LGBTQ allies together with rainbow flags and signs proving that being bi is “not just a phase.”

“Bisexuals are the largest group in the LGBT community and yet they aren’t as visible, and I wanted to help change that,” said bisexual Temple law student Stephen Johnson, the lead organizer of the rally. He says he came up with the idea after noticing that “nothing had been planned for this year.” “After talking to a lesbian friend in law school, we decided that we might as well try to host a rally, even if 10 people came — it would be worth it,” he said. “I think it is important for the LGBT community to make a statement to the public at large that we [bisexuals] are not going anywhere.”

The event is scheduled for Friday, September 23rd, at Board Game Art Park (North 15th Street JFK Boulevard) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The rally is free and open to bisexuals and their LGBTQ allies. Supportive posters and rainbow flags are encouraged, and a post-rally social will be taking place at Woody’s (202 South 13th Street).
