The North Star Bar will close its doors for good on Saturday, October 17th after 30-plus years. The live music venue is in the process of being sold to Joanna and Howard Pang, operators of the Trocadero in Chinatown. Pang has been involved in the North Star since 2000, but is buying out the other principal who goes by the name Sloan.

After a brief overhaul, the Brewerytown standard will be reborn as an as yet unnamed bar/restaurant and beer garden, that according to the North Star’s website, will feature “even better food, ‘more better’ beer and lots of cool fun stuff.” What the new spot won’t have is live music.

If you plan to stop in before the bar closes this Saturday, look for good deals as the North Star will have to clear its stock of liquor. $3 draft beers will continue to be a happy hour draw between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. through the 17th.

For more on the story, check out Victor Fiorillo’s post on The Ticket.

Below is the full text of the statement on the North Star Bar’s website (which is currently down).

The North Star will be closed while renovations take place.  Saturday the 17th of October will be the last day prior to renovating.  The last minute decision was made so that the (mostly) cosmetic work could all be done at once, and in a most expedient fashion. Feel free to stop by and say ‘Hello’, when you see us there working away, painting, etc!

WE ARE OPEN!

Happy Hour will continue right through Saturday 10/17/15!

*Expect some great deals on drinks and beers! We have to clear the stock if possible (Remember to drink responsibly!)

It’s Philly’s Best Happy Hour! Featuring our famously-rotating selection of great draughts, which are a bargain at $3!

(5 PM to 7 PM)

Hours for the Final Week

Thursday 5 pm – 12 am

Friday 5 pm – 2 am

Saturday 5 pm – 2 am

Moving forward!

Good things to come to Fairmount / Brewerytown.

A new name, even better food, ‘more better’ beer and lots of cool fun stuff.

On a “changing times” and sad note, there will be no more live music.

So celebrate the great bands you’ve seen at the North Star and the friends you have made here!  You’ve all been a part of this stellar music scene & history, and nobody can take that away from you!

We will miss the good old days of rock and roll at the North Star, but we will look on them with great fondness for the rest of our lives and hope that you will as well!

IN THE MEANTIME:

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR US IS TO BE GRATEFUL… SO…

THANK YOU REGULARS! THANK YOU FANS! THANK YOU BANDS! THANK YOU PHILADELPHIA! THANK YOU BONFIRE / ELECTRIC FACTORY!

A SPECIAL THANKS TO ANDREW FOR AND HIS BIG HEART AND HARD WORK!

MOST IMPORTANTLY, A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO

OUR NORTH STAR FAMILY (EVERYONE OVER THE YEARS)

FOR THEIR CONSTANT DEDICATION, SUPPORT AND FRIENDSHIP!
