“Noble carrier, we entrust you with the Hammer of Glory, the omnipotent symbol of our beloved Philadelphia Beer Week. May your journey be safe. Work ye up a thirst, for there shall be a beer waiting for you at your destination. Godspeed!”

One of our favorite events of Philly Beer Week is also the first. The Hammer of Glory (HOG) is used to kick off the opening of Philly Beer Week when a dignitary taps the first official keg of Beer Week, at the beginning of the Opening Tap event. But before the hammer arrives at the 23rd Street Armory, it will go on an Olympic flame-like tour of Philadelphia bars and other destinations. Part of the fun is how the hammer travels from bar to bar. This year the HOG will be transported by Philly Roller Derby, the Two Roads VW bus, horse-drawn beer wagon, the Fishtown Beer Runners, wheelbarrow, motorcycle, and Marie Antoinette.

The HOG will make a whopping 23 stops this year. The relay kicks off at CBS 3 Studios at 6:45 am and culminate at Opening Tap at 6:53. Plan on ducking out of work if the Hammer of Glory passes near or perhaps, hop on the SugarHouse Casino’s double-decker bus which will be providing transportation throughout the day.
