Rams To Release Mikell; Jenkins Signs With Giants

A new name will enter the free agency market at safety: Quintin Mikell.

The former Eagle will be released by the Rams on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Mikell spent eight seasons in Philadelphia before signing with St. Louis in 2011.

If you’re wondering about a potential reunion, Mikell is 32 and is not a long-term solution. Then again, I don’t see a single safety on the Eagles’ roster who has proven he can be a starter in this league. Mikell has been durable (missed just one game the past five seasons), and Howie Roseman talked last week about adding key veterans who could help establish the team’s new culture.

According to Pro Football Focus, Mikell played within 8 yards of the line of scrimmage 78.2 percent of the time, the second-highest percentage among safeties. He had nine forced fumbles, four sacks and two interceptions in the past two seasons.

As always, the possibility depends on the market. If Mikell doesn’t draw a lot of interest and is available for the right price, he might at least be worth a look.

The Eagles currently have Nate Allen, Kurt Coleman and David Sims on their roster. Colt Anderson is a restricted free agent.

JENKINS SIGNS WITH GIANTS

Cullen Jenkins has signed a three-year, $8 million ($3M guaranteed) deal with the New York Giants, according to multiple reports.

Jenkins played in 59.6 percent of the Eagles’ defensive snaps last year, according to Pro Football Focus. He had four sacks and 23 hurries, ranking fourth on the team in both categories.

Jenkins is 32.
