Edwards Survives Sleepless Night, Cut-down Day

With cut-down day looming, Trent Edwards had a difficult time sleeping Thursday night. He was feeling confident coming off his two-touchdown performance against the Jets, but had no idea whether he had done enough to win the No. 3 spot away from Mike Kafka. He felt it was a 50-50 shot.

The call from the Eagles finally came around 12:30 Friday afternoon from general manager Howie Roseman.

“He let me know that he wanted me on the team, and somewhat of a congratulatory of a conversation took place then,” said Edwards.

With that, the 28-year-old headed out with his girlfriend to Jeffrey Lurie‘s barbecue to join the rest of his teammates.

Edwards noted how the day is not all joy even though he made the team. There are friends who have their hopes dashed while you’re celebrating your good fortune. But he’ll certainly take it.

“I wouldn’t have been shocked if the ‘215’ area code that called me had been a phone call to turn in my playbook and be told you’re no longer needed,” he said. “It’s good to field a call that was asking me to stay here in Philadelphia. That was my whole goal coming into this, and I’m very excited for the future of this season.”

Edwards assumes the slot behind Michael Vick and Nick Foles, who he has helped mentor over the past several weeks. Asked if he envisioned a scenario where he could  be the primary backup early on, while Foles continues to learn, Edwards made it clear that he is on this team to play the part of the third-stringer. It is a role he seems willing to embrace, which may have factored into the Eagles’ decision to keep him around.

“I’ve learned what it takes to be in a winning locker room and what it takes to be in a losing locker room,” said Edwards. “I’ve tried to carry myself with a winning attitude no matter what day of the week it was, and I’ve always kind of wanted to be a guy that people believed in and trusted. I think my experience, and a combination of all those things, kind of helped me out here.”
