Eagles Wake-Up Call: Solving Big Ben

The Eagles need to figure out how to handle Ben Roethlisberger on third down.

Through three games,  Roethlisberger is 27-of-36 for 354 yards with five touchdowns and zero interceptions on third down, good for a 145.1 quarterback rating. One of the big reasons behind his success is the ability to extend the play with his legs.

“It’s hard, especially when you’ve got guys like that out there that are shifty, you’ve just got to read them down and stay on them,” said Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.  “Make sure you press and keep your eyes on him because you know they’re going to move with him. We’ve been working on that a little bit in practice; the scramble drill and just staying with him.”

Joyner Says Asomugha’s Confidence Is ‘Shot’

Philadelphia Eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha.Former Eagles linebacker Seth Joyner doesn’t like what he’s seeing out of Nnamdi Asomugha.

“He seems to me like he’s lost his confidence,” said Joyner on 97.5 The Fanatic. “And I think one thing that happens when you lose confidence is you begin to break down from a technical standpoint.”

Joyner believes one of the Eagles biggest mistakes was trying to fit Asomugha — a clear press man corner — into a zone scheme last season.

“I think he got put in a situation he wasn’t prepared for, on top of trying to learn a new defense, and his confidence is just gone, shot,” said Joyner. “He’s gone from a guy that was a shutdown corner to in my opinion, as I watch him play, he’s a below-average cornerback right now.”

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Coleman Says ‘D’ Can Be Best Ever

Kurt Coleman was discussing the difference between last year’s defense and the 2012 version when he casually dropped this on the media.

“When the defense is out there to hold them out, we’re able to do it. We’ve proven that,” said Coleman. “We love getting on the field because we want to become the best defense in Philadelphia history, and in the league.”

In Philadelphia history?

“Absolutely. I say it with a straight face,” he said. “I believe it. I believe in the team that we have, the guys that I play next to. We can do it. We need to continue to build on this, and make our legacy.”

Eagles-Steelers Injury Update

Riley Cooper appears to be nearing a return, though Andy Reid said he hasn’t made a decision whether the receiver will be active for Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

“I feel great,” said Cooper.

The Florida product has missed all four games to start the season with a fractured collarbone. He has been practicing to some degree for the last few weeks, and said his conditioning is where it needs to be.

Linebacker Akeem Jordan (hamstring) will not play Sunday, meaning Jamar Chaney will get the nod at weakside linebacker. King Dunlap (hamstring) is questionable along with Colt Anderson (knee) and Derek Landri (knee). Anderson and Landri are expected to play. Same goes for Danny Watkins, who missed Wednesday’s practice with a chest injury.

Demetress Bell got most of the reps with the first team at left tackle and is expected to start over Dunlap.

The Steelers, meanwhile, appear to be in good shape.

Safety Troy Polamalu (calf), running back Rashard Mendenhall (knee), linebacker James Harrison (knee) and tackle Marcus Gilbert (groin) are all probable.

All-22: Getting Shady Loose

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy.The locker stalls of LeSean McCoy and Stanley Havili are right next to each other at Lincoln Financial Field. Following the win over the Giants Sunday night, one reporter mentioned Havili’s name. McCoy, within earshot, said, “He was awesome.” To which Havili replied, “Shady the Giant killer!”

There was plenty of praise to go around after a dominant second half on the ground. Here is a look at the back-to-back big gainers early in the third quarter that provided the spark. As you’ll see, Havili was in fact awesome.
