Work-From-Home Jobs Are Having a Moment Across Pennsylvania
The state ranks high for its number of remote jobs listings, according to a new report.

Though more and more U.S. workers are opting for at-home jobs, many don’t realize that most remote jobs require workers to be based in a specific region or state. Luckily for Pennsylvanians, the Commonwealth is one of the nation’s top states for at-home job opportunities.
Job hunting site FlexJobs ranked the country’s 15 states with the highest number of remote job listings in 2017. Pennsylvania came in at no. 7 for its number of remote jobs postings last year.
A sampling of the Pennsylvania companies the recently recruited telecommuters for remote jobs include Newtown Square software giant SAP, West Chester pharmaceutical distribution company McKesson Corporation and Pittsburgh-based PNC Bank. And unsurprisingly, the top four career fields for remote jobs across the country are medical and health, computer and IT, education, and sales. However, jobs in publishing, transcription, marketing, and even childcare and children’s therapy are beginning to pop up in listings for remote jobs.
The top job titles are account executive, marketing specialist, tutor, social media manager, customer service representative and copywriter.
Overall, 4.6 percent of the U.S. workforce works from home each day, according to FlexJobs, and remote work is even beginning to exceed public transportation as the commute option of choice in more than half of the top U.S. metro areas, according to a 2017 report.
In a separate ranking, the online service looked at the country’s top 25 companies hiring for part-time, work-from-home jobs this season. Philadelphia is home to strategic support services company Delegate Solutions, which ranked as no. 19.
So who should be taking advantage of these remote jobs? Basically anyone with the right skills. As we’ve said before, the side hustle is here to stay and managing a part-time at-home opportunity would be a good place to start.
“Remote job opportunities aren’t relegated to small sections of the country, or determined by geographic region or state side—remote jobs are truly available across the country,” said FlexJobs founder and CEO Sara Sutton Fell. “And while it’s true that most remote jobs do have a geographic requirement, it’s important to note that there are also a growing number of remote jobs that can be done from any location. These ‘work-from-anywhere’ jobs are perfect for people who can’t find a job in their local area, digital nomads, military spouses, people who love to travel, and the many others who want to grow their career but need or want a broader geographic range to find a job,” Sutton said.
