A look at what the first true depth chart reveals. Plus, a busy day for the Eagles as they worked their roster down to 53.
The Eagles acquired safety David Sims from the Browns late Friday evening for a conditional draft pick. To make room on their newly-sculpted 53-man roster, they released Julian Vandervelde.
“Solid tackler, can play on special team,” said general manager Howie Roseman. “He’s a guy that we’ve been following throughout the course of this preseason.”
The 5-9, 204-pound Iowa State product was originally signed by the Giants as an undrafted free agent last season before bouncing to Tampa Bay and eventually Cleveland. This preseason he came up with a pair of interceptions and made 14 tackles.
With cut-down day looming, Trent Edwards had a difficult time sleeping Thursday night. He was feeling confident coming off his two-touchdown performance against the Jets, but had no idea whether he had done enough to win the No. 3 spot away from Mike Kafka. He felt it was a 50-50 shot.
The call from the Eagles finally came around 12:30 Friday afternoon from general manager Howie Roseman.
Andy Reid has chimed in on the decision to release Mike Kafka and go with Trent Edwards as the No. 3 quarterback. “There was great […]
Nineteen players have been cut, and the Eagles’ roster is at 56. They have to get down to 53 by 9 p.m.

Linebacker Keenan Clayton and tight end Chase Ford will be released by the Eagles, according to a league source. Clayton has played in 21 games […]
The Eagles’ decision to part ways with veteran Joselio Hanson signified one thing above all else: They have confidence in rookie Brandon Boykin.
If the coaches had their doubts about Boykin, they could have held on to Hanson, let him start the season as the nickel cornerback and gradually eased the rookie into that role. Instead, Boykin gets the nod right away.
The Eagles roster is beginning to take shape. Wide receiver Chad Hall will be released today, according to multiple reports. Hall was thought to be […]
The first twist of the day. According to Adam Caplan, the Eagles are expected to release Joselio Hanson Friday. Hanson has been running with the […]
Any illusions about potential depth at safety was erased when O.J. Atogwe was forced out of Thursday’s preseason finale against the Jets and onto the trainers table.
The same hamstring injury that kept him out of the previous two games tugged at him again. It was the final sign, if the Eagles needed one, that moves are necessary to bolster the position heading into the regular season.
“I’ve got to look at that,” Andy Reid conceded. “That’s one of those spots I’ve got to look at, just make sure we’re set there, and we’ll do that. We’ll go through all the positions but that’s one where there is some stiff competition, and we have to make sure we’re right there.”
In Andy Reid speak, that’s about as close as you’ll get to an admission that there’s an issue.
It’s tough to get an exact read on what Jeffrey Lurie’s expectations were in 2011.
The simplest way to put it is probably this: The Eagles owner was disappointed with the results, but he understands why the team wasn’t more successful.
“It didn’t create the kind of season we expected last year,” Lurie said Thursday, after mentioning how the team added Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Evan Mathis and Jason Babin last summer. “But we didn’t do it for a single year advancement. We did it for the long term and how to elevate a team. That was a unique chance to do that.”
