Vick: ‘Sometimes You Need To Be Pushed’

Michael VickMichael Vick regrets his comments from the end of minicamp. Says he never should have expressed his frustrations with the quarterback competition. And now that he’s been through the experience, he understands why Chip Kelly took the approach that he did.

“I should have never came out and said that. I just was having a moment,” said Vick. “But I appreciate having to put in the hard work, having all summer to think about what type of mindset I had to come back with. Preparing throughout the summer as if I was fighting for a job. And I was.”

That notion may not have fully dawned on Vick when he restructured his deal to stay in Philadelphia.  Kelly stated from the jump that the job was open, but it didn’t appear to really set in for the veteran until this spring. Following the last practice of minicamp Vick admitted that it was tough splitting the first-team reps, and hoped Kelly would name a starter prior to the opening of training camp.

Instead, Kelly made him earn it.

Nick Foles: ‘I Want To Be Here’

Nick FolesIt didn’t take Nick Foles long to get over the fact that Chip Kelly had chosen Michael Vick as his starter.

“Maybe less than a tenth of a second, I was ready to go,” Foles said. “I’m ready to go back to work, so I wasn’t moping around about it. Had practice today. Was excited to go out there and work.”

Three Thoughts On the Decision To Go With Vick

Michael VickHere are three thoughts on the Eagles’ quarterback situation on the heels of Chip Kelly announcing that Michael Vick will be his starter.

Kelly Names Vick Starting Quarterback For Season

DSC_1662Michael Vick has won the quarterback competition. Chip Kelly named Vick the starter at a press conference prior to Tuesday’s practice at the NovaCare.

“We’ve evaluated the situation, and Michael Vick is going to start for us against the Washington Redskins,” said Kelly. “I met with all the quarterbacks this morning. They understand the plan and know where we are going forward.”

Kelly clarified that Vick is “our starter for the season. It’s not a one-game trial basis.”

McManus: Projecting the Eagles’ 53-Man Roster

Chip KellyYes, I defeated Sheil in the 53-man projection contest last year. Yes, it was as easy as it looked.

I’ve been called many things since then — champion, Nostradamus, King 53 — but honestly, I’d really prefer it if you just call me Tim.

Kapadia is back for more. He took a shot at the 2013 roster last week. My turn this week.Teams must trim their rosters down to 53 by 6 p.m. on Aug. 31. On Aug. 30, we’ll release our final versions, matching our projections up vs. the Eagles’.

Kapadia has already written his concession speech.

Without further ado, let’s get to the award-winning projections.

How the Eagles Package the Zone Read And Bubble Screen

Back in early June, Chip Kelly sat at the head of a conference table in the NovaCare Complex and spent a full hour answering reporters’ questions about his program, his offensive scheme and his philosophies.

avant1bNot surprisingly, the topic of tempo was brought up. And the first-year Eagles’ head coach tried to explain that he didn’t always want to go at a super-fast speed.

“If they didn’t line up right and they have nine guys standing over there and you have a play called that’s going to run into those nine guys, then maybe playing fast wasn’t the smartest thing to do,” Kelly said. “Sometimes you need to let things get settled down and get an opportunity to make sure that you’ve got the right look.

“A lot of things we’re doing, we’re trying to throw it versus the best-located safety. Well, we better make sure we locate the safeties before we snap the football. Do we want to run it at one guy or run away from another guy? You’ve got to make sure some of those things you can see before you start it. It’s just not all driven on let’s see how many plays we can get run.”

While the truth is the Eagles are going to move quickly, Kelly’s response serves as the foundation for much of what he wants to do offensively: spread the field out, look for a numbers advantage and count on the quarterback to make the right decisions.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: From Tra To Todd To Lane

Lane JohnsonPrior to the draft, Tra Thomas was asked to pick between the top three tackles in the class: Did he prefer Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel or Lane Johnson?

“I definitely would take Lane Johnson,” Thomas, now a coaching intern with the Eagles, told 97.5 The Fanatic. “I’ve watched all of these guys. I’ve watched their personal workouts, I’ve watched some game film on them.

“When I look at Johnson, he can play left and he can play right. He’s an athletic guy. I’ve watched him play: he’s got long arms, great athletic ability and I think because he has experience playing at that right side, he’s a perfect fit.”

As it turned out, Fisher went No. 1 to the Chiefs, Joeckel went second to the Jaguars and Johnson landed with the Eagles at 4. Now that he works with him every day, what is his assessment of the rookie?

Camp Notes: Foles Trying To Bounce Back

Nick FolesIf there is a positive spin to put on Nick Foles‘ two preseason turnovers, it’s that both were promptly followed by touchdown drives.

In the opener against the Patriots, Foles was hit from behind as he was trying to pass on his second play from scrimmage and coughed up the football. His next time up he engineered a 10-play, 62-yard drive that Bryce Brown capped with an eight-yard burst up the middle for the score.

Thursday against Carolina, Foles was interecepted by Josh Thomas in the back of the end zone on the opening possession. On the next series he scrambled for the seven-yard touchdown run.

“In both instances in two weeks in a row which I learned from Nick, he can bounce back from an adverse situation.  Not that you ever want to be in one but at least you kind of know how he’ll be,” said Chip Kelly.

Camp Notes: Peters ‘Suiting Up’ Against Jags

Jason Peters practiced in full Saturday after missed the previous two preseason games with a hamstring injury. He declared himself ready to go for the Jaguars game.

“Yeah I’m suiting up this week,” said Peters. “I’m going to go out there and get myself some good work against Jacksonville and get ready for Washington.”

Vick Gets Majority Of First-Team Reps

Michael VickGenerally speaking, Michael Vick and Nick Foles have split first-team reps down the middle since the quarterback competition began this spring. Sunday was a different story.

Vick, fresh off another strong preseason performance on Thursday, worked with the first team for the majority of the team drills. Foles got a look in the latter stages of the session.

Signs continue to point to Vick being the starter on September 9 against the Redskins. Chip Kelly, though, is not ready to crown a winner. And he said that the plan for next week’s preseason tilt with the Jaguars (rotation, etc.) will not be hammered out until Monday.

Eagles Sign DE Eddie McClam

The Eagles have signed 6-6, 280-pound defensive end Eddie McClam on Saturday, the team announced.

McClam was in camp with the Lions last season. He played college ball at Old Dominion. The 24-year-old worked out with the Eagles earlier in the day before landing the job  and participated in Saturday’s practice at Lincoln Financial Field.

Players who were unable to suit up for the session include Curtis Marsh (broken hand), Felix Jones (oblique), Danny Watkins (concusion), Emil Igwenagu (concussion), Dennis Kelly (back) ,  Kenny Phillips (quad) and Casey Matthews (knee).

Jason Peters, who has been sidelined with a hamstring strain, took part in team drills. Jon Dorenbos (concussion) returned to practice.

Trent Cole: ‘It’s Coming Natural Now’

Cole is one of the most important players on the team when it comes to undergoing a successful defensive transformation in Year One. The 30-year-old is being asked to move to a 3-4 outside linebacker role after eight (largely successful) years as a 4-3 defensive end.
