Until all five of the remaining head-coaching openings are filled, Jon Gruden’s name is going to continue to come up.
The Gruden conversation revolves around two key questions:
1. How interested is he in returning to coaching?
2. How interested are teams in bringing him on board?
There have been plenty of rumors, but Ron Jaworski has discussed the possibilities directly with Gruden.
As the coaching search heats up, Tim and Sheil break down the Eagles’ options. Is Jon Gruden trying to throw his hat into the ring? Do the Eagles prefer his brother?
Gus Bradley? Nick Saban? Bruce Arians? There are plenty of names to discuss.

With five head-coaching jobs still available around the NFL, several assistants figure to get interviews this week.
Many of the names being mentioned – Gus Bradley, Mike McCoy, Jay Gruden – were unfamiliar to Eagles fans as recently as a few weeks ago. But if you happen to be engaging in conversation today about who Andy Reid’s successor should be, chances are, you’re throwing around some bigger names.
We’re talking about names like Nick Saban.
Andy Reid talks to the local media about his decision to keep silent until now, his thoughts on the state of the Eagles, and more.
Andy Reid was formally introduced as the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs Monday. He took some time to address his time in Philadelphia, and said he leaves with no regrets.
“I have nothing but good things and good experiences in Philadelphia,” said Reid. “Phenomenal people. Absolutely phenomenal people.
“I can leave Philadelphia saying that I gave it my all. I can leave Philadelphia saying we had some great years there, man. I mean some great years. We were there a long time – I was there a long time. We were blessed to be there. Sometimes change is good. I think it is going to be tremendous for the Philadelphia Eagles, and then on the other hand I think it is going to be tremendous for the Kansas City Chiefs.”
The Eagles are one week into their coaching search, and the landscape has changed considerably.
Chip Kelly and Bill O’Brien are staying at Oregon and Penn State, respectively. Dirk Koetter will remain offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. And Doug Marrone signed on with the Bills.
All four were on the Eagles’ radar at one time or another during the last seven days.
So where do Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski go from here? The interviews will continue this week. Below is a list of candidates to keep an eye on.
Bruce Arians is expected to be released from the hospital “any moment” after being treated for an inner-ear infection, according to his agent, Mike Brown.
Arians, who stepped in for Chuck Pagano and guided the Colts to an 11-5 record this season, got sick this week and was forced to miss Sunday’s 24-9 playoff loss to the Ravens.
The Eagles have requested permission to interview the Colts offensive coordinator but had yet to reach out to the Arians camp to set up an interview time as of late Monday morning, according to Brown. Arians is expected to be back in Indianapolis by this evening and will likely sit down on Tuesday and go over the list of interested teams to formulate a plan. The anticipation is that the interview process will be “in full swing” by Thursday.
With Chip Kelly returning to Oregon and Bill O’Brien headed back to Penn State, the Eagles are expected to take a look at several assistants from the NFL ranks this week.
One of those guys is Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley. Seattle’s defense held a hobbled Robert Griffin III and the Redskins to 14 points in Sunday’s victory. During the regular season, the Seahawks finished first in scoring defense (15.3 PPG) and fourth in Football Outsiders’ rankings.
Bradley’s been Seattle’s defensive coordinator for four seasons. But would he be a good candidate?
Chip Kelly was the story.
There is no name this side of Jon Gruden that would have stirred imaginations and debate quite like the Oregon coach. The Lehigh stands would have been overflowing with fans dying to get an up-close look at this new breed of football. Debate would rage over whether he could thrive in this environment, on this level. Kelly and his Eagles would be talked about across the league.
As we now know, Kelly chose the Ducks over the Birds Sunday, and this will not come to pass. And maybe that’s OK.
Chip Kelly considered becoming the next head coach of the Eagles, but ultimately decided he’d rather stay put at Oregon. Where do Jeffrey Lurie and the Birds go from here?
As the process continues, there’s been a lot of talk about a potential Chip Kelly-Michael Vick connection. But we need to clarify a few points about that discussion.
Let’s start with what Vick wants. Some have speculated that he yearns to play for Kelly and has anxiously been awaiting to find out where the Oregon coach lands. These reports surfaced a couple weeks ago, so Tim asked Vick about them.
The Eagles’ top NFL competitor in the Chip Kelly sweepstakes just reportedly bowed out of the race.
The Eagles and Browns are leaving the desert, and neither has Chip Kelly on the plane with them.
Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski are off to Denver to meet with Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Their lunch with Kelly spilled will into the night Saturday, but the sides parted without reaching any kind of agreement.
The Browns also left empty-handed.
Another twist in the ever-intensifying Eagles coaching search.
Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone, scheduled to interview with the Eagles in Arizona this weekend, has agreed to become the next head coach of the Bills, according to multiple reports.
A look at how it impacts the Eagles,
The Eagles’ lunch with Chip Kelly lasted a bit longer than your usual meet and greet at Chipotle.
On Friday evening, the Browns and Kelly were said to be close to a deal, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. But as we’ve discussed in this space, “close” and “done” are two different things – especially when it comes to the hiring of coaches.
So Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman and Don Smolenski took their best shot at Kelly in Arizona on Saturday, in an effort to lure him in as the next head coach.
