Eagles Wake-Up Call: Looking At Reid’s Last Home Game

Big moments have been few and far between during this the lost season, but we are approaching one.

Andy Reid is about to coach his last home game for the Philadelphia Eagles.

It is not an absolute but it is a cuticle shy of a slam dunk: Reid will not be back for a 15th season. That means the complex relationship between city and coach has just a couple more chances  to be played out publicly.

NFL On Garrett Reid Findings: We Will Follow Up As Appropriate

A member of the NFL league offices addressed the recent discovery that Garrett Reid was in possession of steroids when he died on August 5.

“We are aware of the information,” said a league representative via email, “and will follow up as appropriate.”

The NFL did not say whether they would be conducting an independent investigation.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said that there was no evidence that links the steroids with any members of the Eagles.

Does Vick Want To Stay In Philly? He Won’t Say

Michael Vick spoke with the media for the first time since sustaining a concussion against the Cowboys back on November 11. Nick Foles has since been named the starter, leaving the star quarterback without a starring role and with little control over his future for the moment.

Vick was asked if  he still wants to be In Philadelphia given all that has transpired this season, and whether he would be open to returning next season as a backup.

“I just feel like I have a lot of football to play,” Vick responded. “I feel like I have a lot left in my tank. I’m enjoying the game, I feel fresh. I don’t know, man, I’ll have to talk it over with my agent and just see what happens. As of right now I have to continue to help this football team win these last two games and the future will take care of itself.”

All-22: How the Eagles Got Their Pass-Rush Going

Through the first 13 games, the Eagles’ defensive line had accounted for 20 sacks, or about 1.5 per contest.

Against the Bengals, Tommy Brasher’s groupsacked Andy Dalton six times and kept him uncomfortable all game long (13-for-27 for 127 yards). So what was different about the performance of the defensive line this time around? Here’s a look at all six sacks, using the All-22 shots.

Reid Vague About Vick

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Michael VickMichael Vick has finally been cleared by an independent neurologist after suffering a concussion on November 11 against the Cowboys, and is expected to participate in the Eagles’ light practice Monday morning. It could be an interesting day at the NovaCare Complex, as we may just get to hear what’s going through the quarterback’s mind after losing the starting gig to Nick Foles.

Vick’s short-term future is a bit fuzzy. We know that Foles will start the remaining two games barring injury, but Andy Reid would not even commit to the one-time franchise quarterback being the primary backup the rest of the way. Or even active.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: Draft Watch, Week 16 Edition

With Thursday night’s loss to the Bengals, the Eagles fell to 4-10 on the season with two games left.

Only two teams – the Jaguars (2-12) and the Chiefs (2-12) – have fewer wins. Three teams – the Raiders, Lions and Titans – have the same number of victories as the Eagles. There’s a bit of a catch here since the Titans (4-9) play the Jets tonight.

The tiebreaker among teams with the same record is strength of schedule. The team with the overall easier schedule gets the higher pick. In other words, you get rewarded for being terrible against worse competition. Here’s a look at what the top six picks would look like if the Titans were to lose tonight.

Eagles’ Youth Provides Ray Of Hope

Philadelphia Eagles running back Bryce BrownIf you are looking to take something positive out of this season (or at least for a way to ease your despair), focus on the Eagles’ youth.

An improbable 16 players have made their NFL debuts this season and nine have made their first NFL starts. Whether earning their position outright or forced into action by injury, eight rookies — Brandon Boykin, Bryce Brown, Fletcher Cox, Vinny Curry, Nick Foles,  Damaris Johnson, Dennis Kelly and Mychal Ke ndricks — have all played meaningful snaps. A few others (Chris Polk, Marvin McNutt, Ryan Rau) have had at least a taste of the action.

Here is a look at what some of them are in the process of accomplishing:

Eagles DL Production: Cox, Cole And Graham In 2013?

The Eagles’ defensive line turned in its best performance of the season Thursday night against the Bengals.

Brandon Graham had a career game. Trent Cole looked like the old Trent Cole. Fletcher Cox continued an impressive rookie campaign. And guys like Cullen Jenkins and Cedric Thornton contributed as well.

In all, the defensive line combined for six sacks and eight hurries. Andy Dalton was under constant pressure and completed just 13 of 27 passes for 127 yards.

In a future post, we’ll break out the All-22 and look at why the Eagles defensive line was successful. But first, the player-by-player breakdown.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Nick Saban Question

If you haven’t seen Ron Jaworski‘s comments on Nick Saban yet, here they are:

“I’m not a  Saban guy because I don’t like liars and I think he lied. I think he lied to the Miami Dolphins and the fans of Miami and he left. And I think it’s pretty simple — I think integrity is very important. If you don’t have integrity I don’t know how you can be successful. Yeah, I know he’s great at Alabama and he’ll probably win another national championship but I just don’t like people that don’t have integrity, so it’s pretty easy for me to say that I don’t want Nick Saban in town.”

Something tells me Jaws is not a fan of Nick Saban. And when it comes to the NFL fraternity, he is not alone.

Game Review: Ups And Downs For Foles

Nick Foles was far from the Eagles’ only problem in their 34-13 loss to the Bengals, but after an impressive performance the previous week against the Bucs, the rookie did not play well.

On their last five possessions, the Eagles had an interception, two fumbles and two three-and-outs. They scored 13 points, and one scoring drive started at the Bengals’ 29, while another began at the Bengals’ 12.

Foles went 16-for-33 for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Two incompletions were dropped, and he threw the ball away twice.

Below is a review of his performance after having re-watched the game. We’ll have the All-22 breakdown during the week.

Eagles Wake-Up Call: The Graham/Pierre-Paul Comparison

It’s pretty much impossible to have a discussion about Brandon Graham in this city without mentioning Jason Pierre-Paul.

You know the story by now, but just in case you didn’t start following football until 20 minutes ago: The Eagles traded up to the 13th spot in the first round in 2010 to draft Graham. The Giants took Pierre-Paul two spots later. Pierre-Paul was a first-team All-Pro last year with 16.5 sacks and has a Super Bowl ring. Graham has been fighting for playing time and has yet to play in a postseason game.

But as Tim detailed yesterday, Graham is coming on strong. He has four sacks in four games since replacing Jason Babin as the starter at left defensive end. Against Cincinnati, Graham turned in a 2.5-sack performance that included a forced fumble.

A reader recently e-mailed me, asking for a Graham/Pierre-Paul comparison. Initially, I thought that would be a silly exercise, but after the crunching the numbers, I came away surprised.
