It’s been a while since we first reported that City Fitness would be opening a massive gym at the new East Market development. Over a year later, we’ve finally got an opening date — and a sneak peek inside the new space.

While City Fitness is keeping the interior of their new 36,000-square-foot gym tightly under wraps, they invited Be Well Philly in for a hardhat tour of the unfinished space (as in, really unfinished — staircases had yet to be installed, and the locker rooms were just some pipes in the floor during our July 12 tour). While the gym isn’t ready for showtime yet, we did get to see the bones of the space — and, guys, it’s pretty gorgeous.

The 30-foot windows are the pièce de résistance of the new fitness palace. The super-sized windows are visible whether you’re running on the turf sprint track, lifting weights in the strength area, or sweating it out with the cardio equipment on the 8,000-square-foot floating mezzanine overhead. That means standing almost anywhere in the main gym area, you’ve got some fab views of Philly’s buildings and streets to keep you motivated.

I mean, just look at this snapshot City Fitness’ vice president of marketing Tom Wingert shared on Instagram. How about that natural lighting?

The floors are concrete, and they’ll stay that way, with the exception of the personal training and strength areas covered in turf and rubber gym flooring. Some of the exposed steel beams may also remain visible, for an overall industrial-chic aesthetic.

As for the rest of the space, the new gym will have five fitness studios — one for indoor cycling, one for yoga, and others for aerobic group fitness classes, which may include a whole new boxing program. The men’s and women’s locker rooms will include sauna and steam rooms, and this location will also have co-ed HydroMassage lounges for post-workout relaxation. And speaking of recovery, there’s also plans for a juice bar to take over the gym lobby for easy refueling after class.

While the gym is scheduled to officially open to the public on October 1, they’re planning on a soft opening for September 22. For those who just can’t wait to get into the new space, City Fitness is offering free early access in the form of a 30-day, no-commitment trial to those who sign up here starting August 6.

With the free pass, you’ll not only get a free 30-day membership, but you’ll also get into the club ten days earlier than the rest of us. A brand-new gym, minus the crowds? Sign us up.
