Stay Safe with Home Projects

Avoid the Most Common Reasons for ER Visits

Taking the do-it-yourself route when working on your home can be rewarding, but some home improvement projects are among the top causes for hospital visits. Here are common household activities that lead to the most ER visits and tips for avoiding taking a trip yourself.

Ladders
Every time you use a ladder, Consumer Reports recommends you check for damage. Choose a ladder size suitable for the job you’re doing, so you never have to reach up or out. Be sure the ladder is on a level surface and don’t step above the advised height (marked on each ladder), as the risk of accident increases significantly beyond that level.

Chemicals
Accidents involving paints, solvents, lubricants and other chemicals send thousands of people to the emergency room each year. The most common injuries are chemical burns and breathing complications. Always read the labels on chemicals and be sure to use, store and wear safety gear―such as goggles and gloves―based on the manufacturer’s instructions. Never mix chemicals and keep all chemicals and cleaners in their original containers.

Lawn Mowers
According to the American Academy for Pediatrics, 253,000 people were treated for lawn mower injuries in 2011 including 17,000 who were under the age of 19. Many of these accidents are caused by flying debris and objects, so always inspect for rocks, sticks, toys or anything the lawn mower could potentially hurl. Avoid pulling the lawn mower backwards, and always wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes―not sandals or sneakers―when mowing the lawn.

Power Tools
Keep your work area clean and well-lit and do not operate power tools near flammable liquids, gases or dust, as the tools can emit sparks that can ignite the dust. Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry, as they can get tangled in the tools. Be sure to unplug the tools before troubleshooting.
