Five Philly-Area Hospitals Named to Reuters’ Top 100 List

Thomson Reuters released its annual list of the nation's top hospitals and included a handful of local facilities in the mix.

Main Line Health eked out the biggest local showing in Thomson Reuters’ newly released Top 100 Hospitals list. The health system’s Bryn Mawr Hospital, Lankenau Medical Center and Paoli Hospital all made the cut—the first two in the Teaching Hospitals category and Paoli for Medium Community Hospitals. Doylestown Hospital also won for Medium Community Hospital. Penn Presbyterian Medical Center is listed among the top Major Teaching Hospitals, rounding out the local facilities included on the list.

Reuters compiles its list annually, evaluating nearly 3,000 acute-care hospitals across the country based on public data from Medicare and Medicaid. Researchers look at measures like mortality rate, patient safety and operational efficiency.

Reuters reports that if all hospitals performed as well as the ones on its list, “more than 186,000 additional lives could be saved, 56,000 additional patients could be complication-free, more than $4.3 billion could be saved, and the average patient stay would decrease by nearly half a day.”
