It’s rare that a running back does something without the football in his hands that makes the crowd go crazy.
But let me introduce you to Chris Polk.
During this afternoon’s session, the undrafted free agent out of Washington sent cornerback Brandon Hughes flying on a blitz pickup that drew perhaps the loudest ovation of the day.
Marty Mornhinweg never has a reason to walk over to the field where the defense practices.
As the Eagles assistant head coach/offensive coordinator, his job is to work with Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy and the rest of the team’s talented playmakers.
But for obvious reasons, this morning was different.
Here are the statements, in full, from Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, Lehigh University chief of police Edward Shupp and Northampton County coroner Zachary Lysek.
Andy Reid and his wife, Tammy, spoke about their sons and their family in an exclusive Philadelphia Magazine interview published in January of 2008.
Andy Reid’s son, Garrett, was found dead at training camp, Howie Roseman announced Sunday morning.
He was 29-years-old.
Lehigh University chief of police Edward Shupp said a 9-1-1 call was placed at 7:20 Sunday morning from Sayre Park dormitories. Garrett Reid was deceased upon the officer’s arrival.
One of the Eagles’ undrafted free agents who has a chance to make the team is cornerback Cliff Harris.
But since an NCAA rule prohibited Harris (Oregon) from participating in spring practices, he’s still playing catch-up.
“Cliff is a competitor,” defensive coordinator Juan Castillo said today. “He is still learning our system. The hard thing is that when you miss those OTAs, it’s hard, so he is just trying to get a complete understanding [of the defense]. In the classroom, he understands the scheme, but when it is going fast, I think that is the part in time he will get better and better at.”
In need of a camp body, the Eagles signed defensive end Xavier Brown today.
Brown (6-4, 265) played in the Arena League for the New Orleans Voodoo. He played his college ball at C.W. Post (Long Island).
As the national media continue to check in and out of Lehigh on their training camp tours, the consensus seems to be that the Eagles are a strong contender in the NFC.
The betting public clearly believes that, as the over/under for Eagles wins is at 10.5. Only the Patriots and Packers have higher totals.
But it looks like others in the league, specifically one coach, are buying into the Birds too this season.
The drill matched up a seventh-year veteran with 86 career starts against a rookie seventh-round pick searching for a roster spot.
DeMeco Ryans vs. Bryce Brown. A one-on-one coverage drill pitting linebackers and defensive backs against running backs and wide receivers. The offensive players generally have the advantage with this setup, and there are many more completed passes than passes broken up.
On this particular play, however, there was neither.
From an entertainment standpoint, Asante Samuel’s presence at Lehigh is sorely missed.
Many of us had gotten used to his constant back-and-forth with wide receivers coach David Culley during one-on-one wide receiver/cornerback drills. And the way he led the defensive backs in a “Get money!” chant at the end of practice, while other positional groups went with more conventional phrases like “Hard work!”
And even though Samuel is now down in Atlanta with the Falcons, he’s going to get plenty of questions about his time here with the Birds.
